This is a script I made to help solve the problem of creating a stretchy bone chain of any length. It's not the most robust code, but It works. It uses recursion to parse though each bone and add a float script that will alter the bones X scale.

FAQ

You must first create the chain of bones, and connect them with an IK solver. Open my script - then fill in the boxes by selectingt the first bone, and the IK chain.
