Trion Worlds is looking for an exceptional and passionate Terrain Artist to create fantastic settings for a next-generation, server-based game. The Terrain Artist will work with the Art Director, Lead Environment Artist, and our design and engineering teams to sculpt terrain and create play spaces, establishing gorgeous vistas for our AAA-quality worlds.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with Lead Terrain Artist, designers, programmers, and concept artists to create final art for terrain and objects

  • Create vistas and natural play spaces with in-house terrain editing software

  • Optimize assets to run at a desirable frame-rate and fit within memory limitations

  • Carry out the art style specified by the Art Director and Lead Terrain Artist

  • Communicate problem areas, expectations, or desired modifications to the Lead Terrain Artist to accomplish visual consistency and quality within the game

  • Express to Leads when support is necessary to meet project goals

  • Communicate openly and frequently with designers to achieve a balance of pleasing visuals and compelling game play

  • Assist in creating environment models, UV mapping, lighting, terrain, and shader setups (including applicable texture maps) within a scheduled timeframe

  • Ensure files, directories, and other storage means are clean and well-organized

  • Keep abreast of changes and improvements made to the game engine and production pipeline during development

  • Work with the lead artists, technical artists, and tools programmers to optimize the production of environments

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Portfolio or reel demonstrating strong competency in the following areas: current-generation modeling, texturing, and lighting, with examples of organic terrain, corresponding prop objects, and scene composition

  • Working knowledge of Maya and Photoshop

  • Excellent working knowledge of game engines, terrain, and art-generation tools

  • 3+ years of industry experience

  • Excellent comprehension and working knowledge of the environment production pipeline, including understanding memory/poly/texture limitations, efficiency in building collision, creating streaming/loading levels, character and level lighting, etc.

  • Credit on at least two shipped titles in the role of terrain or environment artist

  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

 

PLUSES

  • Experience with Zbrush or Mudbox

  • Art-related college degree: BA or BFA
