SEEKING:  Terrain Artist for our DEFIANCE, game


DEFIANCE™ is the first multi-platform shooter MMO that in a ground-breaking entertainment experience interconnects with a global television program on Syfy. The game combines the intense action of a console third-person shooter, with the persistence, scale, and customization of an MMO, while its TV counterpart exudes the scope, story, and drama of a classic sci-fi epic.

 

Being developed for the PC, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, DEFIANCE unites the MMORPG and Shooter game genres across the most popular platforms.

 

Trion Worlds is looking for an exceptional and passionate Terrain Artist to create fantastic settings for a next generation, server-based game to be co-developed with Syfy. The Terrain Artist will work with the Art Director, Lead Environment Artist, and our design and engineering teams to determine the style for our AAA quality worlds.

RESPONSIBILITIES

 Work with Lead Terrain Artist, Designers, Programmers, and Concept Artists to create final art for terrain and objects

Optimize assets to run at a desirable frame-rate and fit within memory limitations

Carry out the art style specified by the Art Director and Lead Terrain Artist

Communicate problem areas, expectations, or desired modifications to the Lead Terrain Artist to accomplish visual consistency and quality within the game

Optimize assets to run at a desirable frame-rate and fit within memory limitations

Express to Leads when support is necessary to meet project goals

Assist in creating environment models, UV mapping, lighting, terrain, and shader setups (including applicable texture maps,) within a scheduled timeframe

Ensure files, directories, and other storage means are clean and well-organized

Keep abreast of changes and improvements made to the game engine and production pipeline during development

Work with the Lead Artists, Technical Artists, and Tools Programmers to optimize the production of environments

Assist and mentor Terrain Artists with modeling, texturing, lighting, optimization, and time management, as well as art, design, and technical issues

REQUIREMENTS

Portfolio or reel demonstrating strong competency in the following areas: current-generation modeling, texturing, and lighting, with examples of organic terrain and corresponding prop objects

Working knowledge of Maya and Photoshop

Excellent working knowledge of game engines, terrain, and art generation tools

3+ years of industry experience

Excellent comprehension and working knowledge of the environment production pipeline, including understanding memory/poly/texture limitations, efficiency in building collision, creating streaming/loading levels, character and level lighting

Credit on at least two shipped titles in the role of Terrain or Environment Artist

Strong work ethic and attention to detail

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

PLUSES

Experience with Zbrush or Mudbox

Art-related college degree: BA or BFA
