Microsoft Studios’ Good Science team is looking for a highly talented Concept Artist to help us visualize innovative experiences that will change the way people enjoy their entertainment. to help. This is a rare opportunity to work with an elite team of industry experts creating the next platform of entertainment experiences that use new software and hardware technologies in unprecedented ways.

Candidates will have a proven track record in creating high-quality artwork in a broad range of styles and finish levels, from storyboards and sketches to polished color concept work. Candidates are confident in programs like Photoshop and Illustrator and versed in Flash, or equivalent programs, as well as knowledge of current visualization processes and techniques. This individual is expected to bring creativity, efficient communication and high impact to the visual design process and to collaborate effectively with development team members. The Concept Artist will have a deep understanding of popular trends in entertainment and graphic design across several target audiences. Some fluency with 3D tools is considered a bonus.

Reporting to the Production Designer, the Concept Artist is focused on aiding the Art director and Designers in pre-visualizing new experiences, working through the design development process and delivering high quality finished imagery for internal and external presentation or as final production assets.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for working closely with the art director and experience designers to assist in the visualization of any assets in the form of traditional and/or digital 2D drawings, texture swatches, color studies or storyboards

Provide design sketches, detailed concept drawings and designs for architectural as well as natural (organic) environments, characters and objects to be built by 3D artists

Render detailed scenic/environmental drawings and/or digital paintings in 2D, sometimes based on primitive 3D geometry provided by designers and artists

Maintain consistency of the appropriate style across a project, under the direction of the Art Director

Contribute as a visual problem-solver, actively participating in creative discussions and reviews as part of effective communication with cross discipline team members

Give appropriate feedback to improve the creative process and/or product in a collaborative environment, and proactively seek feedback from peers and leads

Be a positive and creative force in the team.

When needed, assist in the creation of final assets for use in the product and user interface

When needed, assist in the creation of marketing materials and promotional assets

Accurately project time and resource needs and consistently meet project deadlines and milestones set by project leads

Be organized, self-motivated and able to identify and meet goals

Work quickly, strategically and efficiently in order to meet the project’s schedule demands

Have and continue to develop strong technical understanding of digital tools and current workflows

QUALIFICATIONS:

3+ years in concept or 3d art position or equivalent experience with at least 2 shipped titles preferred. We will consider candidates with 3+ years of experience as concept artist in other CG related fields

AA/BFA preferred, or at least can demonstrate through portfolio an industry standard level of art

PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS:

Excellent traditional drawing and conceptualization skills with an ability to adapt to a wide and diverse range of artistic and design styles.

Demonstrate experience with visual development process; including thumbnails, rough sketches, iterations and refinements through to the final version.

Demonstrate mastery of fundamental illustration skills including, form, composition, perspective, value and color theory.

Firm grasp of using color and lighting techniques to create mood, definition, atmosphere and depth.

Examples of human and animal anatomy, showing varied character types, clothing etc.

Examples of design and rendering of both architectural and organic spaces, interior and exterior environments

High-end digital illustration skills with an advanced level of using Photoshop and/or Painter
