I used to teach Character Design classes at The Animation Academy in Burbank, California (http://www.theanimationacademy.com/). At one point I gave out an exercise that required the students to try to redesign an overused archetype / icon that has become a visual standard in a different sort of way. For my demonstration I chose to redraw Cthulu. Now as we all know, he is usually depicted as a humanoid figure with an octopoid head. I tried to integrate the aquatic / octopoid elements in a different way to create a different visual take on a character that we all take for granted.
