Artist's Comments

Completed from sketch to finish in photoshop 7 I glanced at some photos of abandoned factories and hazmat suits for accuracy, other than that; no references.

    creepy as hell, great job!
great storytelling in here, and expression on right guy is very truthful.
somehow lighting reminds me of Doom3.

The lighting on that monster is CRAZY!! Wow, such a good painting. The only thing i don't like it the tenticle things from his mouth. Reminds me too much of zoidburg from Futurama, and zoidburg isn't scary. haha

      Heehee! No Zoidberg sure isnt.
Im sure glad you dig the rest of it though!
I like the tentacles, the work really came together for me after I had done it, I was looking for a high impact look and the enlarged cranium and mouth of tentecles snapped it all together for me.

I think it's great you can paint like that with no reference.. but if you used more reference your paintings could look even better.. you know, reference is helpful to come up with interesting designs for props, interesting textures, so you don't always have to reinvent the wheel, but you can start off with something instead.

Ill look at a few photo's to make sure im on the mark and accurate but thats it.
I dont like to incorporate other peoples work or photos into mine, I think its cheating; you dont learn anything that way.
Id rather look at a photo and try and duplicate why it looks real myself.

Sure my work could always be better, you can say that for all artists with the exception of but a few.
I can live with that as long as its *my* work.

I dont have to be a perfect draftsman, Id much rather be a perpetual student always finding ways to improve.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Cool, your work is good, I hope you understood what I was saying..
I look at this piece, and their suits look like they're made of the same material as the creature, or the same material as the wall, it's a generic lambertian material,..
The monitor in this piece looks very flat and its design is very generic. Same thing for the design of theirs suits, it's very generic, you have great painting skills, and I think you your work could improve even more if you looked around, collected reference for each of the elements that you want to include in the painting.. you may not use any of them, or you may source some elements here and there, they're just helpful to avoid painting a "generic tv", or a "generic suit", or a "generic creature". I have the greatest respect for your work, sorry if what I said seemed offensive.

No offense taken at all, and im grateful you have respect for my work.

But I  think your nickle-diming the work and being overly-critical at this point.

Im really not quite sure how you could possibly confuse the creatures skin with those rubber hazmat suits and of all things the wall since the suits are creased and reflect the light sources more harshly;  the creatures skin is softer and of obviously different texture taking both veins and warts and hair into consideration, in addition to the wall texture being flat with chipped paint shadowing.

I think your assuming a lot.

I take hours to research photos for works and look at several for accuracy's sake, sorry if they dont translate as being original enough for you or too generic for your tastes.
Simply put; the suits and camera are generic so they dont pull too much attention away from the focus of the creature, unless of course the creature is also too generic for you - that I can't help.

Sometimes artists forget to look at art as a spectator, you can tell this when comments start off with " its great and everything but *insert 2 paragraphs of smug art-teacher speak here* " and never, ever comment on the aspects of the work they even remotely like - thats if there even are any and chances are if there are it gets back-handed, token mention.

Some people are going to like it, others arent - I can live with that, you cant please everyone and I dont try to.
Art critiques come in the same variety; some are helpful, others inane.

Building skills is a process; not everything is going to be stellar and evolved to its obvious conclusion right out of the gate.

I can also live with that.
