I suppose you could but it would take longer. That's why the Mudbox and Zbrush are so popular, because of how much easier and more naturally you can make this kind of detail. The 32 bit displacement map is just the output of the difference of the low-res base mesh and the hi-res detail. I would look into getting Mudbox or Zbrush. ;)

Oh, so if i want to learn that should i just look for stuff on displacement maps?
I only have max, is it possible to model something this detailed just using Max?
I think around 32 million polys in Mudbox and then in max its just a normal mesh with displacement maps.
How many polygons is this? I'm diving into 3D, so i am amazed by how detailed this is. I don't even understand how you can get something looking that detailed in 3D.
love this. the render is so realistic, it looks like a man with make up (in a good way)
