    I suppose you could but it would take longer. That's why the Mudbox and Zbrush are so popular, because of how much easier and more naturally you can make this kind of detail. The 32 bit displacement map is just the output of the difference of the low-res base mesh and the hi-res detail. I would look into getting Mudbox or Zbrush. ;)

    I think around 32 million polys in Mudbox and then in max its just a normal mesh with displacement maps.
