You could probably spare a few polys by removing the not at all visible one from the model.
Just a question:
What's the poly count of the weapon station?

Wow dude! the details on this is SO nice. One thing that really irks me though is the wireframes are actually quite horrendous. Seems like you used a lot of boolean operations without cleaning up the results? Or perhaps just converted from splines to polygons.
While the results are actually super impressive, you may find you will run in to some lighting issues while rendering due to the elongated triangles in many places.
Good luck with your career change also! It can be tough at first.
