I'm having trouble making them look as massive as I want them to be. I'm also torn between horizontal composition and vertical. Horizontal makes them look like they're watching over the seascape more.

Just realized the rule said all types of illustrations. Not all type of mediums. Spent weeks on a charcoal drawing, #%*^!!!!!!!
I do plan to color it in computer, does it still count?

i suggest a landscape comp, but not one so wide as to severely diminish the amount of vertical space you have to work with(so, square-ish, i guess).

also, bush-brush on a small setting ftw VS. scale.

Lys, lovely start. Great colours and shapes there.
Didzis, thanks nice composition in yours, the sweeping rings on the next planet look great.
Burhton- Great start. Both work great, and as a picture the long one looks cooler, but seems to emphasise the ocean more than the whole world.

                        Here's an update on mine

While the majority of the art on CGHub is digital, historically we have also encouraged folks working in traditional media. I would say keep pursuing your illustration as you had envisioned it. Obviously, there were illustrators before there were computers. This is not my activity to make the rules, but I don't see a rule prohibiting traditional media in Illustrated. Personally I love charcoal for how expressive it can be.

Praying I'll have enough time to color this, never done color on top of a greyscale before.

Also debating if i should redraw the darn fish. It looks so detailed compared to the rest because I had shrink it down

First time entering one of these challenges on here - I meant to be really disciplined and work steadily on it but I've left a big chunk of the work till the last week... Anyway, here's my WIPs:
