Until we have a 3D version of this activity, I am willing to accept works that were prepared with 3D programs as long as you pick a single view and export that view to a 2D file format for upload.

Please don't keep everything a secret!

    Default not worthy...

I decided that the only way I could possibly do this subject justice is to go 3D. I planned out the city out in Illustrator, imported it to MAX, and extruded the shapes. So far it looks like a tabletop model, which feels fitting...

    Cool Model Aaron.
Just wondering How many lights did you use for this ?
Since you have a model you should play with different views to get a nice angle.

Only one light in this render. I'm still figuring out mental ray (with help from lynda.com) and I havent decided what my process is going to be to reach a final product, but I agree that I need to spend some time finding the right angle now that I have the model drafted.

We will soon have a helper moderator in this activity to do some of those things we discussed about keeping all the activity banners up to date, etc. I appreciate the work you guys do and I am trying to make sure the good work in here does not go unnoticed.

      Default Greyhawk

A sketch I've worked on tonight, after seeing some entries from an outside view, showing the whole city, I figured I get a view from down in the streets. If that's not the whats intended from the brief, I can do another sketch.

      No problem Kronso.

If there is anyone who finds this brief too restrictive, the current challenge in Illustrated is called "A New World" and is a little more wide open as to subject matter. The main thing to remember is that activity wants your work to tell a story, so you would probably insert some characters or creatures to your world interacting in some way. See: http://cghub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8873 the Illustrated activity will be going on for about another five weeks, so it is also good for people who find the two week turnaround to be too fast.

      Default Greyhawk Update

Yeah, this image, like most I do, would benefit from more of a focus or story. I figure I'll post this update before making some radical changes.
I think adding some figures might do it, but I'm going to try to extend upward and add either a large castle/keep as a focus, or maybe another elevated area of the city.

The colors are temporary. They will change soon.

Mm, to think about it, mine looks pretty sci-fi-ish so i might do some more brain storming and do couple more sketches to get more fantacy feeling city.

I figured it looked more like a small village than a the capital city of an entire world, so I decided to go for a more cluttered fantasy metropolis look.
It looks a bit over complicated and confusing at the moment, but I'm hoping when the edges get cleared up, the value is corrected, and atmospheric perspective added, things will become more clear.

Some cropping is probably in order as well

Kronso- Cool image. It is developing nicely. I like how you have lit the scene. Maybe you could darken up the foreground a bit, to create more of a separation between your the foreground and mid-ground.
