Year of the Dragon

The year of the Rabbit is ending and its time for the return of the Dragon. Be in time for Chinese New Year with a dragon themed drawing jam. There are a delightful amount of colours and symbolic images inherent to this time of year so it might be worth a little research to really take your illustration to the next level.

Does it have to be a Chinese dragon?

It doesn't *have* to be but I would say chinese dragon inspired so for example a bright green western dragon would be abit out of place.

I'm the year of the dragon, so I'll bet this will be fun I hope I'll be able to finish this drawing jam this time. Wasn't so luck last time.

Hope others have fun with this!

Here's my sketch/idea...any tips are welcome!

I am also wondering, how do you usually organize your layers when painting (especially with figures)? And do you normally work from detailed sketches or just start painting things from scratch? I don't have a ton of experience painting (mostly do things in a comic book style) and looking for some advice

                Default Wip 01

Here are my first attempts for the Year of the dragon concept that I drew in my sketch book this week. I am creating a dragon that is inspired by the dragons you sometimes see in chinese new year parades. I plan on contineing this concept with the dragon walking out of colorful smoke from mystical fireworks.

So... I've really wanted to get back into the drawing world, take a break from 3D. And away from medical. I love dragons, so this is fortuitous. I can't wait to see what comes from this contest. A scanned semi-cleaned up sketch of an idea.

A very quick value study and a basic color scheme... (that, in all likelihood, will morph as the drawing continues to evolve.) Just laying some ideas out.
