Anatomicae 21# : Bioluminescent Demigod
''Fabled creature of the deeps, revered or perhaps feared.''
Due Date: January 6th, 12:00 am EST, 2012 (!)

Your art director is in rare form this week, with this new assignment coming out of nowhere.

You are being asked to design an underwater creature with fulfills several criteria:
- It exhibits bioluminescence, or produces its own lights and colors. (For more on bioluminescence and its functions, read here.
-The creature fulfills some niche purpose to the culture it inhabits- specifically, it carries a religious significance. This can be either to the humanoids of the planet it is on (earth or otherwise), or to the animals/sentient forms of life around it.
-It is an very rare animal/form of life, so depict it alone instead of in a school/cluster of similar life forms.

What we're looking for in this challenge is simplicity in execution and good design. Many of you may find that the most effective way of executing this challenge is monochromatically, on a black background- others may decide to go another route.
Regardless of your approach, this challenge is a great opportunity for you to experiment with light, color, and abstract design. Your critiques will be focused on how successful you were in filling the criteria.

Keep in mind it can be any type of sea creature you decide to give bioluminescence- from any earth sea animal to an exotic alien life form you create.

Okay here's the concept I've got so far, I really like the shipwreck idea, but it doesn't add to the simplicity in execution; I also like better the creature's side view... maybe I'll change the head and go with the shipwreck or just keep up with the other one and make it more like a character concept.

Any suggestions are very welcome!

Barely got through new year with a lot of work from everywhere but I think I can finally take a good times break and jump into this challenge...I've got a pretty good idea of what I'll be doing this time Will post some doodles soon!

Okay I think I will go with this. I simply changed the head of the first to the body in the shipwreck.
I've made a quick sketch of how and where comes the light from to polish the idea a little.

@MrBrown-Concept #3 seems really interesting, good or bad guy? definitively a thinker..keep going
@DANgerous-I like the idea of having on eye lighter than the other, and with some multiple eyes, maybe you can try to add more, with different size of eyeballs -good start.
