Default CharacterFORGE 3D :: ROUND 014 :: DYNAMIC HANDS

DYNAMIC HANDS

An expressive character is not only about a posture and nice facial expressions. Hands play a major role in how he or she communicates and comes across. And yet they are more often than not glossed over and ignored in the 3d world.

It's time to change that.

This challenge is all about the hands. Try to convey emotions through the palm and five digits. Look at your own hands, look at master sculptors and push yourself! You can sculpt just the hands or, if you feel you'll manage, a character emphasizing their gestures.

Have fun!

RULES AND GUIDELINES (MUST READ) :

Layout/Size: Keep all submissions to 1000-1200 pixels in height or width. Dont go too crazy on the number of WIP images - 2 pics say enough, we don't need 10 images with different matcaps each

At least two WIP images are required before posting the final piece.

Post your WIP images in this thread. Do not open a separate thread.

Submissions: Post Final Images in Finals Thread (To be posted later.)

-One Entry Per Person (the character should be new and created for this exercise)

-Beauty render, not just zbrush screen capture please

-Beauty render has to be in CLAY style only, Texturing is not required and shall not be considered for judgment .

-Follow the topic description to the best of your ability.

- Pay attention to anatomy, shape, form, and lighting. USE REFERENCE. Critical thinking is key to great character design.

- DO NOT post your image in your portfolio before the the results of the challenge are published

DEADLINE : 22 JANUARY 2012

Will be my first Character Forge - Really excited what it brings as a end result - do you have to do a lowpoly model with uvs and normal map etc. or is a highpoly enough? have fun to everyone who is participating and merry christmas to the cghub community. Keep up the fantastic & amazing artwork you all are doing!!
Best regards,
Kenny

KC-Production - welcome You don't need to worry about texturing or low res mesh. It's a purely sculpting competition

pabgo - great choice, I look forward to what you make

gimong910 - glad to hear it

Hands are one of the most complex parts of the human body since they have so much motion and expression (almost equal to faces in difficulty, really). I've been avoiding them for too long so I am in!

I have a love for hands, so i'm in. always been inspired by Rodin's Hand studies/ works. wanted to make some in clay at some point, so this will be a nice exercise.

This was the initial blockout I did with ZSpheres just to find main masses and locate forms as well as check the proportions (lots of errors but it was a start):

And here is a more refined version:

Critiques are most welcome, don't go easy on me!

p.s. The hardest part is knowing the planes of a hand and which tendons and bony landmarks appear on the surface under different poses... Although 2D references helped immensely during the process, I had to refer to my own hand a lot just to find the views that flat images cannot provide.

Ok I'm in too! & first character forge as well. I decided to go for the whole character thing with someone falling... may not be the best way to start because I didn't spend much time actually sculpting hands. Anyway I'll have time to figure them out^^
              And good luck everyone!

                Hi everyone,

This is my first community activity I'm taking part in as I'm still fairly new to Zbrush and 3D in general.

Really just wanted to establish the pose with this first version, the idea I had in mind was a wizard or sorcerer conjuring up a destructive spell. Haven't really gone in and worked on anatomy or proportions yet, I will post my second WIP after I've taken a first pass on that stuff.

So this will be my first competition. I am looking forward to seeing what everyone creates and currently I have a few ideas in mind. Good luck to everyone.

a good start everyone Welcome to the challenge

KotLeopold - nice start. I think retopoing could help - you've almost got some webbing between the fingers now in the refined version. Also the styloid process of the ulna looks a bit too spikey and sharp.
Also perhaps referencing your own hand to see how the skin wraps around the fingers where they join the palm could help. Right now they seem to be stuck in there

mdonze - great to have you in A very challenging pose you've got there. I look forward to how it develops

Zozobra - good start and an interesting pose Keep going - it would be cool to see the pose from other points of view

                  d3ltus - welcome
