The Deadline is Midnight California time, December 13, 2011. I'm giving an extra week on this. I'd like to see some stupendous work. You may either draw a redesign of one of the movie Thulsa Doom's pads or else you can go sideways and make up a place the Robert Howard stories version of Thulsa Doom might have lived in. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thulsa_Doom_(character)

If anybody's confused about what this activity is all about, feel free to PM me.
<> Follow the brief. Of course there's always room for your interpretation of the brief.
<> Color or black and white are both OK
<> Digital or traditional media are both OK
<> All skill levels are welcome here. We can all stand to get better but we only improve if we try.
<> We accept only finished artwork that was made for this activity.
<> Please only one entry per episode per participant.
<> If possible prepare a voting thumb like they do in the other activities.
<> Have fun, above all else!
<> No tracing: http://cghub.com/forum/showthread.php?p=55427#post55427

Overall in this activity we we be focused on places rather than people or creatures. These will be the sets, or matte paintings if you like, upon which characters, creatures, or vehicles might play out their respective roles within the broader story line of a game, movie, or art for a print work. My co-moderator and I will present you with a batch of information concerning the setting of a game or story and your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to knock my socks off with your best attempt at drawing that set. I know you can do it!

Until we have a 3D version of this activity, I am willing to accept works that were prepared with 3D programs as long as you pick a single view and export that view to a 2D file format for upload.

Please don't keep everything a secret, working on your image in private only to post it at the very last hour as a surprise. The point of sharing sketches and work in progress material is so everyone can learn from each other, receive crits, compliments and improve their skills in a classroom/workshop like environment. There are no teachers and no students per se, but try to offer help to others when possible. Please be open to receiving crits, and paint-overs or mock ups of your work, as we are all here to participate, have fun, learn, grow and enjoy what each week has to offer.

There's something we used to do in another activity on another forum. It was "Trash talking encouraged." I am inviting open discussion on that topic. I know it's not very much in keeping with the way we usually do things. I'm just having a hard time figuring out what will result in sustained interest in this activity.

Sundance, who is an old friend from those days, knows what I am talking about. Romance is registered on these forums but doesn't post. Viag rarely posts, except to gallery.

What do you say, guys? Is it going to help the activity if I enable trash talking for its amusement value? (Not talking about personally mean, but instead about ribbing designed to encourage the artist to rise above him/herself) I especially welcome the input of newcomers. Those of you who actually post entries are the ones who will carry the most weight with me. Some of you who actually post are compete newcomers to me, and yet I care what you want more than the rest because you are the ones who post something.

Aside: Post art, Sundance. I know you can do it. Don't let these kids steal your thunder.

@arttorney: i really don't feel eighter way about bashing others, people are different, someone might get encouraged to work harder when someone might take it too serious.
Anyway on to the challenge itself, at first i tought the topic was kinda "meh" but i think i have few good ideas, starting working on them tomorrow

Hmm ... If I caught the idea of the message (unfortunately I have a strong English grammar is lame), what tricks do not help either: the transfer of air through the landscape - too specific area of activity. Simply draw a character on some simple background - it's more popular and easier. Because of this, and the popularity of those topics.

Speaking of the participation of artists with a high level drawing me personally - it tones and traing. It's fun and informative! Very easy to take away a piece of candy a child, and now try to take candy from a professional boxer ... =)

Once again I apologize, if not entirely true realized.

Hey guys, just recently entered the hub and have had lots of fun in other challenges. I'm no environment artist, but I wanna get out of my comfort zone and try something different...so...count me in on this!
About the bashing people subject...Im not so sure about it. I,personally, have some artistic self esteem issues :P I dont like my art and I, personally, dont know how I would take some trash talk about my WIPs...
Anyhow, thats my 2 cents on the subject...will be working on my WIP soon

All right. It's not going to happen. I just need to figure out a way to come up with topics that people will want to draw.

Awesome Silhouette Cursed. The Triangle comp that you have is really cool. If you off center the building then it might make it a bit more dynamic.

I know. it's on me about that front page thing. To work that thing properly I need time to make the image and update all the information. Regrettably I have to make a living. I get up about four AM and work through to about six PM five days a week (and then I generally write a bunch of client letters or bills at least one of the weekend days). When I do draw and post a banner, it gets into the main rotation at once.

In my defense I am tossing in updates to the Facebook page about as much as the months I don't manage to mess around making a 2D banner for the front page.

I dont think the problem are the topics. I think actually it may be more encouraging to some if the amount of time given is longer than it has been in the past. Most of these finish up in a few days. If the time allocated to each round was longer, it would give those interested more of an incentive so they could finish a piece of artwork thoroughly, instead of just submitting whatever they happened to 'whip up just before the deadline'.

Does anybody else feel that way? Are you talking about a month?

The problem I see with more time is that people just procrastinate even more and they still don't start on their piece until the last few days.

It would make life easier for me because I have to do all the work to turnaround the activity rounds about half as often. If the round sucks, you all have to sit around that much longer waiting for a better topic.

I think length is fine, about 2weeks is pretty nice, maybe seasonal challenges could be longer and sorry to arttorney i didn't mean it was your fault that front bage is not dated i tought that there was a piece of code or somthing that auto picks the newest challenges

No worries. I know it's not evident how a lot of the stuff gets done around here. I can change the current challenges thing on the front page when I find the time. I can also propose images to go above in the banner of square images along the top of the forums. That latter form of change is not automatic but instead goes through editorial review. We call it Moderator's Picks. Those square images at the top could be a good motivator for people to try hard. Half-assed activity entries aren't going to make it past the editorial board, but if I see something awesome I can Mod Pick it and the artist stands a good chance to be featured up there for a day or two.

As noted before, I can pimp the challenge on Facebook. We generally discuss topics in advance in a Moderator area, but it is still hard to nail awesome topics from round to round.
