~Challenge Starts Monday November 7th at 12:00 am EST~

This months challenge is for you to sculpt a Golem. Golems are In-animate objects pieced together and brought to life through magic. In Jewish folklore, a golem (Hebrew: גולם‎; English pronunciation: /ˈɡoʊləm/ goh-ləm) is an animated anthropomorphic being, created entirely from inanimate matter.

You can create your Golems from any materials, metal, wood, crystal, bone, bodies, clay, etc. Mix and match if you want too!
Just as long as you capture the intended materials its created from.

Requirements:
~ Sculpt/ Model a Golem construct
~ Must capture intended materials in sculpture
~ Front and 3/4 shot grey scale
~ 1 Beauty Shot, Posed (grey scale or textured if you have time)

The object of this challenge is to get you to work on your abilities to match your reference "material".

If its a clay golem, I want to see him with clay like details. Look at clay scupltures as reference. An Armour golem might be made up of bits and pieces of spare armor, the metal plates should look like bashed and battered armour. A Flesh golem should look like frankenstein or something along those lines. Explore your ideas and come up with something cool.

Thanks Ketka for the use of your awesomely well done golem painting.(Banner image)

Will certainly try and enter this. Interesting topic. I am undecided between a lot of themes - rock, scrap metal and ice among others.

It says 'sculpt'; however can we poly-model the golem, or is it just a sculpting challenge? Also, what maps can we use?

EDIT: OK, it really says 'Scuplt' :P

I'm pretty sure poly modeling up front, and detailing in ZB or MB is perfectly fine. I'm pretty sure that if you really wanted to, that poly modeling it from front to back, to final render in max, modo, maya. or xsi would be fine too.

Its "creature planets 3d", a 3d creature creation challenge, not necessarily a sculpting challenge.

I think they are encouraging sculpting because thats where most character and creature artist have turned their attention to these days. Overall its a much faster and intuitive process that allows for more freedom when creating and fleshing out details trying to establish a personal style or aesthetic, you would otherwise have to fake and finagle with textures, pre and post rendering magic tricks etc, that would eat up allot of the time you have to create and finish it. Sculpting, artist can spend 90% of their limited time iterating, designing, detailing and polishing in real-time, in the raw.

lol... When I say sculpt I mean it in the general sense of modeling in a 3D program like maya or softimage and also sculpting in Zbrush or mudbox.

You can render in any 3d program you want.
if you can do everything in zbrush go for it!
if you want to make it look amazing with a mental ray render from maya or softimage its up to you.

It's your pipeline... part of these challenges is to test your ability to get things done by a certain deadline. You will learn new tricks to improve your efficiency to help make you a faster artist.

Glad to see alot of people joining this!

          Goodluck!
