If anybody's confused about what this activity is all about, feel free to PM me.
<> Follow the brief. Of course there's always room for your interpretation of the brief.
<> Color or black and white are both OK
<> Digital or traditional media are both OK
<> All skill levels are welcome here. We can all stand to get better but we only improve if we try.
<> We accept only finished artwork that was made for this activity.
<> Please only one entry per episode per participant.
<> If possible prepare a voting thumb like they do in the other activities.
<> Have fun, above all else!
<> No tracing: http://cghub.com/forum/showthread.php?p=55427#post55427

When you vote, I'm begging you, please don't vote for yourself. Think about it. What's the point? If everybody votes for themselves then everybody gets one vote and nobody has learned anything.

Overall in this activity we we be focused on places rather than people or creatures. These will be the sets, or matte paintings if you like, upon which characters, creatures, or vehicles might play out their respective roles within the broader story line of a game, movie, or art for a print work. My co-moderator and I will present you with a batch of information concerning the setting of a game or story and your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to knock my socks off with your best attempt at drawing that set. I know you can do it!

Until we have a 3D version of this activity, I am willing to accept works that were prepared with 3D programs as long as you pick a single view and export that view to a 2D file format for upload.

Please don't keep everything a secret, working on your image in private only to post it at the very last hour as a surprise. The point of sharing sketches and work in progress material is so everyone can learn from each other, receive crits, compliments and improve their skills in a classroom/workshop like environment. There are no teachers and no students per se, but try to offer help to others when possible. Please be open to receiving crits, and paint-overs or mock ups of your work, as we are all here to participate, have fun, learn, grow and enjoy what each week has to offer.

Happy Halloween! This round we are going to do something to help celebrate Halloween. The topic we have selected is to draw the River Styx over which Charon would ferry the dead into Hades. Deadline: November 4, 2011 Midnight Pacific time.

Early sketch. The basic idea is to have an eerie luminescent mist creeping around. Carved columns fused with stalagamites. A stagnant river.

    Update.

Due to unexpected things happening, I had to abandon my Jedi temple entry.
Hopefully I can make it up on this and Hope that nothing happens to ruin this activity too..

Here's my wip, I've been practising with this sketch style lately and I kinda like how they turn out in the end.

              Some color comps so far.
I'm kinda tore between 1st and 2nd, first one is more hellish and second is more old style styx.
Witch one people here like more?

You know I'm always pulling for you Sundance. Good to see you around these parts.

That's nice Larsen. I'm glad to see you working in the boat. I was figuring the boat would be one of the hard things for anyone who would put it in there.

Swordfish- yours reminds me of some scenes from Dante's Inferno. It looks like you are going the Hellish direction.

I'm not sure which I liked better, Cursed. I think it's a matter of taste and I still frankly haven't really figured out the pulse of the voters myself.

Good idea with the "S" curve. It's a tried and true compositional device. Looks like you are going for a more traditional Hades ruled by Hades interpretation instead of the Hellfire and damnation approach.

2Cursed: Or try the cold blue or green color? Ghosts add.

                  Step two.
                  - Red or not red ... I can not decide on color. Most likely, not red... And brighter to do...
                  - Added water. Everyone knows that the water and I was wondering last night: what's inside (and why water is poisoned by Styx). But it's not now.

I had to work out most the details still need a little bit more. I'm loving the other compositions i see on here and cant wait to see them finished for this.

@arttorney - i never played dantes inferno after my brother in law told me of what he thought of it. That and i wasnt equipped with a console at the time to play it. Still in that situation too.

Oh. There's a game? I was talking about the book I did a book report on in the eighth grade. It was a bit of a departure from the stuff the other kids were reading.

In the very lowest ring of the inferno there is a field of ice where those whose sin was being a traitor are partially buried. They just stay in there freezing for eternity.

In the middle of it there is a ginormous demon head that is eternally chewing up three major traitors to Christianity. Judas Iscariot was there but I am a little hazy on the other two. Maybe Pontius Pilate and Herod.
