Default Stayinwonderland's sketchbook: pencil anatomy studies

    The saga so far...

I used to dream of being an illustrator in high school and then I went to college and ended up being a graphic designer/web designer for 10 years, stuck behind a desk, getting told off by the boss for surfing the net... enough was enough.

I quit my job, now I'm freelance and am studying to pursue my original dream. But I never truly 'studied' when I was a kid so now is the time.

Hoping that I'll noticeably improve in this thread. I'm not happy at all with where I'm at with anatomy so bear with me!

You may notice my annotations. If it has an 'x' by it, that means it's crap. Or if it has 'crap' by it... lol.

Thanks Alex. That's what this is mainly about; studying so I can improve my mental library.

Today's study. Getting better at structuring the head/skull. Just need to work on features.

Hey Andy, props to you for pursuing your passion. It gets easier from here, despite how frustrating it can be at times. You're definitely on the right track! Are you studying from Bridgman or Hogarth or anyone? I have a pdf of Hogarth's How To Draw Heads if you're interested!

And just like Alex said, do try to draw what you've learned from memory. It will show you what you still need to learn.

                  Thanks for the encouragement

I have the Hogarth book. I think I prefer Loomis. I also watch a bit of david finch.

                  There is much to learn!

EDIT: Although loomis doesn't have much decent hand related work whereas hogarth is better for that!

Like what you guys said, putting what i'm learning into practise.

Here's a wee sketch of a ninja turtle. I hope to paint him soon.

For the physique I used a picture of Dexter Jackson

Haven't done pencil studies for a few days but have been working up the ninja turtle... nervously as i'm not too comfortable painting characters.

                        Here's a WIP.

                        Tips please!

Still haven't done much pencil studies yet because I've been full time on my ninja turtle.

Although this is a thread for pencil anatomy I wanted to share my ninja turtle work because a) I'm really pleased with it and b) It's kind of in the realms of anatomy study too.

So here's my progress so far...

                          Feedback much appreciated.

Will post more later when (hopefully) it's finished!

                          Exhausted!

                            Cool anatomy pencil studies!
The ninja turtle turned out cool too, an advise would be to make the textures a bit more obvious (at the moment everything seems the same material) and play a bit more with hard/soft edges to give more focal point

                            keep it up!
