    Default CharacterFORGE 2D #017 :: ArchAngel!

    CharacterFORGE 2D :: ROUND 017 :: ArchAngel!
    Important! Please go over Plagiarism and other FAQs for these activities.

    How to Attach Images
    ****************************************

    BRIEF: Design the Archangel known as Uriel (male appearance)

    Character Types: Otherworldly
    Setting: Modern Day Earth
    Race: Unknown (but they can appear in human form)
    Challenge Limitations: Full body armor, full pose, must have a flaming sword.

    Angels are present everywhere in art, folklore, and many religions. This challenge will focus mainly on designing a fictional character who is an archangel, though this angel is also said to be a seraphim. For this challenge, he will be an archangel and is also said to be the Patron of the Arts.

    We don't know what angels really look like, or if they exist at all. But they do exist in art and in literature, and they have fascinated people for generations. This challenge is simple, but also difficult in pulling off.

    Back Story: The archangel Uriel is reported to have visited prominent artists of the day, and he comes with a message - "Go forth and create works of art & wonder, and show to the world that humanity is more about the heart and soul and less about power, wealth, or war. Inspire others, and be inspired!" Artists who claim to have seen the archangel Uriel have said that he is fierce looking, handsome, and is dressed in shining, intricately decorated, battle armor and carries a steel flaming sword that is almost blinding. He appears to have wings, almost bird-like, but not made of feathers, yet they are huge and appear to give off light. There is a warm, glowing presence around the archangel. Uriel has guided some of the great artists and writers of the past, including Michelangelo, Shakespeare, and Beethoven.

    You may also include an artist-type figure (sculptor, painter, etc) in your design, but it is optional.

      I have always kind of imagined Uriel as androgynous...

      Would that be acceptable, as long as it's clearly not a woman?

      Edit: Nevermind, I'm beefing him up. I want some man candy in this round.

        @parpica - Yeah, it's kinda weird that they are doing angels too. Pure coincidence! :P

        @Sorknes - draw all the man-candy you want!!

          Default First post here

          I've been more of a silent watcher in these parts, but making my first post here on Zephyri's encouragement. I've been working on a series of archangels for years now and have recently come to an impasse. This seemed like a great opportunity to stretch my legs and try something new with some of my favorites.

          Looks like there're going to be a lot of beefy angels this post! I shall have to counter with androgyny, methinks.

          I'm also posting this post so I can meet the 1 post count requirement to post the sketches I did. XD

            Cool First Time Here

            I started out with simple sketches using the 'stumpy pencil' brush in PS just to get to know him a bit. Ignore the DO ART guy. He was just for fun (I'm highly amused by the oxymoron of a guy in full armor who is also a patron of the arts).

            I've also done a previous rendition of Uriel here, for the curious:
            http://ladydove7.deviantart.com/art/...-Uriel-6568618

            Not sure which direction I'll go with just yet , but I love the flow of the sketch on the bottom right. I also have this awful urge to put Uriel in tactical armor instead, considering the challenge specified 'modern day'...yet there're links to medieval armor? I'm also wanting to make a 'fiery sword' with flame motifs rather than actual flames. Would this be acceptable?

            Either way, this is going to be good fun and great practice!

              @angelicshadow You can create modern armor on him if you like, the guides in the challenge are just that, "guides". I think it would be cool to see an angel in tactical armor, though if it were me I would tend to decorate it as much as I can since it would be the highest form of tactical armor one can wear - but I digress...

              I just want to see the sword have power, hot steam, glowing, giving off light, something that makes other beings think twice about challenging Uriel. It doesn't have to be actual flames, per se, just have a "flaming look". Hope this helps a bit! You have full artistic license to make your archangel look like how you want, but also remember to give the art-director what he/she needs. But for these challenges, simply have fun.
