stace, My favorite one is the little middle one, really nice shapes!

witmann-art, Wow that was a big change, really well done and glad i could help

Blindrat, Good to see you here again! good start its full of personality.

trailofcrumbsAwesome start, my favourite one is the last one on the right!

parpicaWelcome there are a few challenges running simultaniously! Great start and at the same time humerous with the coke bottle

htkpeh nice sketches, watchout for the neck of the scythe seems too short compared to the blade!

VaejounLiking the puppet idea ALOT! but design wise the third one got my heart! maybe just the blade could be a mix up of the gothic one?

Cold,Super awesome thumbs man, well done, but i do have to break it up to you, the scythe needs to at least resemble a scythe (at least the blade!) and the last batch of thumbs resemble of a saw kind of weapon... maybe make a mix of both, saw with an EXTENDED scythe blade!...?

Wow that was long, hope you guys are having fun, don't forget to use reference and help eachother!

@Cold: Thanks, for now I went with a mix of the candle versions.
About yours: All look amazing, but I prefer D with the top design, though the glowing effect on the others is a little more interesting.

@htkpeh: Right now I prefer #2, the proportions seem to be better. Maybe a little slimmer in the middle. Keep it up. Made me think about "the thing". Gross and creepy.

JohnSilva: Yea, I like it too. For now I made the "good designed" one ^^ And maybe I will give the puppet a shot after that.

JohnSilva , who the fuk do you think you are?? - keep your big head on your own plate, don't bring your crappy arrogance over to me. That's one. Two - let me break something to you, the word "resemble" has nothing to do with the word "function" or "based on", so fall back in line, hater. I rather have you draw something to support the community then give your 2 sense to everyone else.

Cold, 1-no one here intended to offend/being arrogant to you in any way possible and/or disrespect you, it would be nice if you could do the same and keep your wording into a professional/friendly level at least...

          2- Definition of resemble... re·sem·ble/riˈzembəl/
Verb: Have qualities or features, esp. those of appearance, in common with (someone or something); look or seem like...

What a cylinder type saw has any features/qualities in common or seems to look like a scythe blade ?

3-With all that said i want to make it clear i am not intended to be arrogant, you are an incredible artist and i respect you for that, i apologize for any misunderstanding, but i still don't think the last batch was appropriate to the jam description, that was my only critique.

Edit PS: The reason why i'm mostly commenting and not participating in the jam is because i'm the Anatomicae Jam moderator, and its my duty to keep things up with comments weather i participate fully or not.

Whoa, so many new entries here! Awesomesauce!

Thanks guys for the feedback, I haven't had a chance to work on my design too much but update tonight after my job!

            As for rounds...

Vaejoun - Great design, I even love how you included a light at the bottom! It will definitely be interesting to see you color this with all these light sources.

htkpeh - Whoa, I think yours is my favorite. The proportions you used are really interesting and super cool! Reminds me a bit of some scythe looking weapons from the Monster Hunter art book (which I've scanned just to share with you: click).

Cold - Liking the green color scheme. It is evident that you are having fun reinventing the scythe, but like others have pointed out, I don't get the scythe vibe from your latest designs. Looks like a giant pizza cutter right now, tbh. Maybe it's a scythe that has a chain blade of some kind to latch onto the back? Just keep going, it's always interesting to see what you post up.

Cheo - Looking good! Lots of different materials... I would mostly focus on the metal some more to really make it pop more. Maybe also soften the cloth to make it not as sharp as the metal.

Alola - Very cool blade design! The pole is a little too straight for me. Incorporate some more curves into the handle piece and it will bring your design together.

parpica - Haha, yours is so wicked! I love the idea so much! It made me laugh!

trailofcrumbs - Love how each one of your thumbnails can be developed into something cool and interesting! I can see that you've found the wiki page on the war scythe, ehehe? Very awesome! Just think of what aspect you want to focus on.

Blindrat - Super great! Love the incorporation of the feathers (right? because of the bird skull?) and engraving in the blade. As someone said, I would rethink the screw looking handle.

If I miss anyone, keep going! There are a lot of souls to reap and we need all the scythes we can get!

To clarify for anyone else who might be confused about the function of moderators on Anatomicae or any other board:

We are here to set up and run the challenges, to make sure that the criteria of the challenges are met by WIPs and to provide feedback/critiques.

We are not here to single people out or insult them for choices they make in their WIPs. There is nothing personal about any comments that we make. I think every artist has had a point where their dander was gotten up by a particularly aggressive critique, but keep in mind we're here to keep things fun and informative, not to bust your chops.

oohh vae very cool man....it came out nice... i really like how the tip gets darker.... hmm ill try to spend more time if u have it on rendering the areas of most importance. maybe make the background a tiny bit darker behind the candles and light so they pop out more. ...idk thatsmy 2 cents

Vaejoun: nice colours man, I'd also recommend to darken the bg slightly. Maybe you could also "overxpose" the candle/lantern lights a bit, that would make them pop out more. I think they're great elements and important focal points of the design.

                stace: waitin for ya reaper!

Vaejoun, Super awesome, just a couple of things you might not be aware.

(candle lights) -light travels with color particles and when it hits on a surface it shows the colors it was traveled with, so in this case the candle lights are green and whatever that light hits, it will leave a green surrounding around that light area,

(Focus/background) -you could add a darker background around the light areas, that will create a focal point and pop out the lights,

(Soft/Hard edges) -the melted part of the candle is hard edged with a smooth surface (not always true so research for other examples), all i did was hardening that surface and make it more obvious candle texture, at the moment it was looking a tiny bit like foam, specular light spots can make an edge looking easily hard.

                Reference of regular/normal melted candle:

Here's a fast paint-over showing what i just described (easier to understand)

                Before, after gif:

                Hope this helps!
                Remember to look at reference

Vaejoun: sweet, i crap my pants .... oh wait, it just skid mark

Stace: but ... i wasn't intend to make people laugh

SCWatson: Hey i didn't get your message, can you send it again. thanks.

Cold: Chill out man, if you don't like any c&c you can always ignore it by rolling your eyes back. but make sure nobody knows if you're doing that, other wise that'd be very rude.

So here's an update on my super-serious-non-humorous scythe

Added a flashlight on top. Admittedly it's a rip-off from Vaejoun's concept. I was like "damn he got candles and lantern and all, i need to get mine a flashlight, and it last longer than candles". so mine is better. Plus i still have the cold beverage. it's not like you are not gonna put a teacup on yours, ....or are you?
