Welcome to the Creature Planets, the CG HUB challenge of exploring worlds beyond our own!

Topic #48 :: August 17, 2011
Organisms: the food chain of Dri-7645
Planet: Dri-7645

Deadline: Sunday Aug 28, 2011 - 11:59p.m. [PST]

--> IWCA Requirements – The IWCA wants you to depict the food chain of a newly discovered Dri-7645

Here are the organism's details. Follow them to the best of your ability!

Planet Overview:
A new planet has been discovered with very original qualities not seen anywhere; an incredibly dark gas giant. The newly christened Dri-7645 appears to have albedo of about 1%, meaning that only about 1% of the sun's light gets reflected back into the atmosphere, making this planet, very very dark.
On the planets surface are a mixture of gasses which appear to be almost completely absorbing all incoming light. The shocking discovery is that this black planet is rich with life. IWCA has recorded plenty of organic movement on the surface, but the cameras are only able to record these intriguing silhouettes.

Your task:
Depict at least 5 of these silhouettes that roam the surface of this planet. Since the lighting is very limited, we ask you to present these silhouettes on a very light/white background. within these silhouettes you may depict very minimal detail, no more than 5% visibility. Also since this planet is rich with life, we want these silhouettes to be presented in a food chain, meaning creatures of all sizes. "big fish eats little fish, bigger fish eats big fish"

This round is meant to practice you positive/negative space when deciding creatures, so please focus on that, and try to forget the details on the inside. If you wish, you can freely do more than 5, we just want to see you brainstorm many different ideas. Try to think about telling a 'story' when designing silhouettes, how the creature hunts, travels, so on.

Good Luck! And remember to have fun!

PS: round number 50 is almost here, and as hinted before, there will be a prize for the winner. it will be a very long and creative round. advertisements coming soon, so keep lurking these forums

Thanks for linking that Brynn makes it even cooler that it's actually based in reality.

Just a little wip, none of these are final designs nor are they in final food chain ordering. I'll prob end up doing a ton of these.

I'll be taking part this round (scanner was finally fixed)

my first few drafts probably won't be posted - I misread it as "only five percent of each creature" is all we can see. I missed the siloettes part.

    this'll be fun.

      Hey Guys

Been ages since I've done any drawing at all. Thought I'd weigh in with a wip.

Good to be back at it. Some great entries already.

Excellent starts so far everyone! I do need to mention that this planet is a gas giant This will greatly effect some of your body plans. Sorry for not being clear enough.

Brynn_Metheney could you please explain me what a gas giant means? English is not my mother language and I find it hard to understand some certain specific points. Does gas giant means that creatures breathe gas? Or that most of them fly on the gas...

if you could give me some details I would much appreciate it!

BTW this is a creative and original topic

in our solar system, planets like Jupiter, Neptune, and Saturn.

But does that means that creatures breathe gas or the whole planet structure/surface is gas? I just cant understand how this will affect my work, sorry for my ignorance!

@kfu: The way I understand it, it means that the planet is composed of mostly gas (hah) and not rock or other minerals/metals, so essentially no completely solid surface, however the gases do get quite thick in the centers, and thinner on the out layers. Although the description does say "roams the surface" so maybe im wrong?

              Also Gas Giant

                yes, to both.

if its alive, it breathes something. (even fish breathe, sometimes air, sometimes water; and we land-dwellers also breathe, but we don't breathe land)

Natzuurjk phrases it better than I did, imho.

                quoted for truth.
