Default 3D Creature Planets Mini Sculpt Challenge # 1 SCULPTRIS

Hello everyone!

Pixologic has released an alpha version of the program Sculptris.

This program is free to download and use by anyone. Just fill out the form and they will send you a link to download it.

*It may take up to 24 hours for them to get back to you so if there is trouble downloading it let me know.*
heres the link:
http://www.pixologic.com/sculptris/

"Sculptris is an elegant, powerful and yet easy to use 3D sculpting software, allowing the artist in you to simply focus on creating amazing 3D artwork. Gone are the technical and often tedious constraints typically associated with digital art.

If you're new to the world of digital sculpting, Sculptris is the ideal ground on which to get started. If on the other hand you're experienced in CG you will find in Sculptris is a blazingly fast way realize your concepts.

It's intuitive, fun and user friendly, so you can focus as an artist on pure creativity."

I thought it would be cool to have a mini challenge of 2 weeks to get you guys to play with it and go crazy, experiment and come up with any thing you want. Almost... as long as it is creature or monster like I don't care.

When sculpting in sculptris it really feels like you are sculpting with clay. Instead of modifying existing geometry you are adding or removing geometry the same as you would add remove clay in real life.

Check out the videos on the page and give it a try!

Starting June 24th 12:01 am EST and Finishing on the July 8th 11:59 pm EST

Doesn't look like too many people are interested in this challenge...

I've played with but am currently consumed with a modeling test for one of Sony's game studio's...

For those that did try the program, some feedback about it would be cool.

did you find it easy to use and navigate within it?

what did you think of the "claylike" feeling of the geometry while sculpting?

would you incorporate this into your personal or professional pipeline?

Any other comments about it, feel free to add.

Thanks guys.

I actually discovered Sculptris from a friend, and instantly feel in love with the freedom of non topological sculpting restriction. It is very liberating to be able to sketch out an idea very quickly, without having to worry about not enough polys in extrusions.

I come from mudbox, but Sculptris will definately become part of my toolbox from now on. Particularly in quickly generating solid ideas, which can than be worked on to a final with mudbox.

here is one I made earlier

all up it took me 3 hrs for sculpting and compositing, the model came from a sphere

To feedback to kryssmen questions:

did you find it easy to use and navigate within it?
Yep! not a problem coming from mudbox, I really like the ability to rotate just by dragging in empty space, also the spacebar quick menu for strength and size is awesome.

what did you think of the "claylike" feeling of the geometry while sculpting?
Very nice, the draw brush gives rounded results, while the wax feature feels just like spreading clay with a tool and softclay feature is like using your hands. I found it easier to do hard edges using sculptris wax brush than mudbox.

would you incorporate this into your personal or professional pipeline?
100%

Thanks for the response John.

I have to agree with all the reasons you enjoy sculptris. it really is a more intuitive and fluid sculpting program.

Have you tried zbrush at all? Its navigation is very similar to sculptris. Its quite intuitive too, my only complaint with Zbrush would be that they cram too much extra junk into the latest iterations without finalizing the polish on the current and most utilized tools.

As for Sculptris, I will use it mostly for quick concepting, a really easy way to flesh out an idea.
