that looks like a very nicely-made creature....though it strikes me as being quite bilateral.

      but its definately worth trying.

(now I need to make sure I left room internally for bones)
It's mostly the camouflage fused and placed onto the body that makes it asymmetrical. The creature itself could be symmetrical. I'll update the prompt to make it more clear, Thanks!

          just in case...

I got the idea from the twisted feet of echidnas and the "fused jaws" of the seahorse family - four of the eight stubby limbs are fused in pairs to form crude jaws. (but they're still recognizably limbs)

Not sure which sort of warts to use...ones that border on the bubbles and flags of Leafy Sea Dragons, or more like the clustered goosebumps I did in pencil a few posts ago. Thoughts? these would be the way sticks and stones are held against the body.

It wasn't until I did the gillbones, that a thought occured to me: that the gillplate could be much longer, and the underside could be coated with a feathery, moss-length bed of gills...but that's a level of detail I haven't reached yet. maybe after a few assignments.

            colored pencil.
(the body looked more purple-red when I was using the pencil)

the blue color around the rocks and vents, is from a chemical being produced by the vents. (and naturally the camera magnifies it)

not sure what color to make the shellbone on the dorsal side of the body.

Did a quick sketch on the iPad I thought I would toss up here. I imagined this critter resting within a burrow of the hydrothermal vent gathering most of it's energy from that. It supplements it's diet with prey, specifically choosing a species to supply its current nutritional needs. This monster masks its face with the carcass of a "bait" fish. It explodes from its tunnel to strike yet the cold water effects this hot creature dramatically and it may take many hours for it to return completely to its home where it slowly absorbs it's prize.

Some good ideas going. Wallasaurus I'm digging the way you are thinking this out. Very cool.

a very nice evoking of the deep-rift ecosystem. (and the variable visibility down there)

Awesome work so far everyone! I'm worried about time. Would everyone benefit from a small extension?
