    thx John Silva...

I guess you're right about the edges and the reflection on the nose, and the cigarette. I'll work on that.

Yet I'm not sure about the fur texture, I'll try something... but I'm not sure how it'll come along...

cyl1981: Looking great already. Maybe make the head a little longer, right now he looks a little more like a housecat than a lion...

Cyl: Absolutely beautiful texture- Very Rembrandt! The way you've handled the shape of the head is fantastic- don't be afraid, however, to work up to certain ''hot'' notes or sheen on his eye, nose, or hair. A lot of the portraits done in that style use very minimalist highlights in that way, but if its well-placed and thoughtful it will bring a great vibrancy and indication of the lightsource.

Friends: Usually this isn't done, but I think I may speak with John regarding extending the contest through this weekend to this upcoming Monday, just to give us time perhaps for a few more people to enter in. )

Hey guys, thanx for the supports and cc, made some more progress, am I glad I am doing this digitally, I can't imagine how long this would have take me if I have to really paint it out on canvas. This update is a bit cluttered, sorry about that, just trying to show the steps of how I get to the image I have now.

I had a crazy idea this morning, thought about painting in the space marine armor from starcraft, for this portrait, maybe for private sessions heh. Anyway I hope everyone enjoy doing this as much as I did, till next time, take care guys ~ ;D

Playing around with some variations in color, somehow the green one looks more vintage to me~

cyl1981: Absolutely stunning... now he does look like a lion...

maybe add one little bright reflection in the eye, or don't. Either way your illustration is great...

black_rain6, Its great man, loving the traditional feeling to it, i just feel that body/clothes are a bit too soft comparing to the head, try hardening a few places to give a soft transition from soft and hard, think of balance.

Well i decided to join too just because this is out of my comfort zone ALOT, here's a wip:

Layed out colors only so far, next step is to soften places that are needed and a bit of rendering

          Great topic!

Portrait by Henry Raeburn. (Rev. Alexander Carlyle). Not sure about the toad species.
Trying to pose the toad like in the portrait, as well as to to mimic the light source. Which is giving me some colour issues at the moment, haha.

          Some quick ones for the last couple;

cyl1981 - I love the feel of yours. Think you're missing some colour and contrast variation in the lion's head. Though that may be because you're aiming for a setting and surroundings like you have in the reference portrait. I do think that he could use just a little more punch though, as the armour is drawing a lot of focus away from him.

JohnSilva - Promising! Coat looks a bit flabby, you should get it right while you still can! Think you picked a tough portrait image with very strong light. Since it's black/white you may need to fill in some blanks, like the light source's colour. Great pose and expression already!

black_rain6 - You got great reference, and a humorous image too. I like how the skin actually 'feels' like horse skin. Not sure how you pulled that off. Hope you still have some time to tinker with this one. Some areas (manes, ears, hoof, clothes) could use some polish. Shame to hear about photoshop. Also; adding one or two of those typical veins on the head can really add some nice detail. Also presents to opportunity to add even more shape to the head.

Something I whipped up tonight, may add a monocle. Hope to have time to push it.

cyl1981: I think that the middle one is the best looking, maybe a bit of the shadow from the right one on the top left and bottom to focus the eye, but not so much as the last. It's looking really cool!
