Here's my 3rd WIP, and a couple questions...
Been playing around with the colors a bit, to see if maybe a bit of brown would look better than everything being grayscale. What do you think? Also, does anyone have some good tips (or brush suggestions) for painting realistic fur? Thanks ![]()

Le_Eb: Oh my. You didn't include a photo of your chosen reference animal but I'm going to assume you picked a fringed penguin. That having been said the quality of your marks and colors are absolutely superb and painterly. You've got a great sense of real paint going on, and I really think the finished product will be awesome. You may consider ''modernizing'' it a bit by bringing up the saturation of the subject's beak-nose or fringe, but even if you stay extremely true to your source material I think this will be a great piece.
Pixelchick: Awesome. You've picked a rather ambitious portrait source, but so far in your WIP I see great potential and demonstrable technical skill. The expression of your sultan-ram is priceless- he looks so very dignified! It's coming along great now. I would suggest not being afraid to eventually work up to those creamy, saturated yellows in your final. The actual fabric and structure of the clothes will be a challenge, but you could have a -lot- of fun experimenting in a painterly technique to render that sort've silk brocade. Please post again! Kittensoft: If you are working in photoshop, the use of the Color or Soft Light layers could help with experimenting to see if you would like more brown added to his fur. As a suggestion: There are many, many ways to get fur painted up. Personally, I like working dark to light- Start with the dark color of what the fur or hair would be as the base, close to the skin. A secondary layer in midtones blocks in the general form and direction of the fur, and then you go in ontop with your lightest tone to put in the individual strands/clumps of hair. Using the round semi-hard default brush in Photoshop is very good for this. Working in that order is an easy way to get the multilayered, nuance texture of hair or fur without a huge amount of work on painting in individual hairs. In the case of your doggy subject, you might want to use a hard brush and a more ''squiggly'' line to get a feel for the rougher, frizzier texture of that particular dog's type of fur! thx... I don't know how this kind of Penguin is called in english, in german it's "Felsenpinguin"...
From now on I'll only do some minor adjustments, since I have quite a lot to do for Uni... Still not sure about the hair... |

Le_Eb, Haha thats a nice one, funny too, i just feel that the edges could be a bit more harder in the "nose" and add more fur slashes (or make it more obvious) on the face, with that lighting setting i think a specular would be shown also on his nose, that cigar seems a bit too flat, but maybe that's just because you haven't render it yet.
keep them coming guys, great works so far! ~John Silva
