Great work on this challenge, guys. We've got some wonderful, top-of-the-line work here!

Reserving this space for my exit critiques, which I will try to get up and posted tomorrow morning/early afternoon. Meanwhile, go ahead and vote and tell your friends to come on over to do the same :3

            Here we go!

Robobobo: As the only entrant who went with a character design for this contest, you certainly stood out from the crowd.
I believe you mentioned a few times that you were pretty busy with exams and such, so thank you for taking the time to make an entry!
I am pleased with the progression you had on this piece. You had said that you started out with a definite exaggeration of proportions that you wanted to keep, and I believe you toned it down just enough to make this a believable creature. In fact, you could've perhaps gone even a little bit bigger/longer with the arms and still kept it believable.
Whatever your process, you did a very good job in conveying the texture of the alien's skin, which looks shiny/slimy in some areas, and has a metallic sheen in others- something I'm guessing you achieved with the Dodge tool. I could be wrong! If I'm not, however, I definitely think you should check out the works of Brad Rigney/Cryptcrawler. He has a very straightforward way of working using the Dodge tool to great effect.

The bells-and-whistles you designed for this guy work very well to give him that sort've 1950s, It Came From Mars! vibe. The ray-gun is especially cool.
I would suggest, maybe, taking more risks in your anatomy design. In the case of designing an alien, literally -anything- goes in terms of porportions, limbs, skin, whatever. You have total freedom to create something within the realm of plausibility, so have fun with it! This guy is a sturdy and believable character design in and of himself, but next time opportunity arises (to paint a gun-toting martian, at least) I think you should try for some a bit more fun and outrageous.

ScalC: This came out really well. I am so happy to see that you preserved the quality of light in the final - The middle area with the cast shadows and bright light hitting the canyon wall in the middle foreground came out really beautifully. I'm surprised at your choice of texture and color in the sky- I'm much more partial to the amber/yellows in the far distance than to the smoky grey at the verymost top, but the choice of color lends the entire piece a sense of ''oppressive nature''.

Usually the inclusion of a basic human figure only serves to give a sense of scale in a picture, but in this case I feel like the humans lend a sense of a story. It -would- be nice to see that light- which is so strong and crystalline on the canyon wall and floor- at least giving a tiny bit of edgelight to those figures.
The foreground is very well constructed, and it's good to see some texture and passages of tone in there where you could've taken the easy route and go straight to black. There's many little passages of light and color here that catch the eye throughout the entire piece.
There -are- places where you could've gotten more atmosphere by darkening up. The right side of the middle cliff has just about the same tones as the left side of it (the side facing the light source). If that wall was just a few shades darker it would lead the eye up that passage in the rock and be an exact foil to that strong crescent shape made by the foreground cliff.
Either way your piece is strong, and gets my personal vote as the winner of this challenge.

jacobanderson: The first thing that really arrests and grabs the eye is the unique perspective. The tilt and curvature of the planet as well as the extreme foreshortening of the foreground building go a long way in making this piece the most -dynamic- out of all the other submitted images.

Your choices in color are bold and work surprisingly well. The transitions of deep cool blues to metallic greys into that pink salmon hue are refreshing to look at and show a certain boldness in your choices. You've done a very good job, as well, with alternating the quality of your brushstrokes in terms of texture and materials for each individual object.
I will admit as it is right now there could be some confusion about the groundplane. As I understand it we are looking down at a few dome-pod-like buildings dotting the surface, but the texture of the strokes makes the ground look almost like a layer of clouds instead of a rocky, solid surface. (This feeling may be emphasized by how relatively close the rockets are to the ground, the tracer lines coming out of ground with no apparent source, etc.) Considering the VERY bright light on the horizon, I feel the cast shadows would be longer and much more dramatic then as they are now- if those shadows were stretched and darkened, however, it would make the image even more dynamic as those lines would really emphasize the diagonal compositions and planes.

kittensoft: The colors of this piece are hands down the most eyecatching of all the submissions. It's really lovely to see such deep, saturated hues, especially when they are treated sensibly. Sometimes artists who work in bright, deeply saturated colors allow their value ranges to get wonky, but I really do think you pulled off a great tonal range and clarity in this work. Like I said before in critique on your work in progress, the rock shapes and general flow of lines give this picture a good sense of ''inclusion''. Despite the choice of the high, top-down view and high angle of the groundplane, the repetitive circles and semi-circles do a great job of pulling the viewer in.
I also feel like you did a good job clarifying the lights/lightsources from your work in progress.
