Default JValdes -3D- Red Riding Hood

Hello and good luck to everyone in the challenge! I had a few ideas going in my head but I guess this one was calling to me the most. I'll tackle this piece in 3D with a stylized approach to the models and some painterly textures to help retain an illustrative quality.

Here is the backstory thus far and my concept!

In a post-apocalyptic world, Red Riding Hood battles the Werewolves which now plague the land. Raised by her Grandmother in this harsh new world, she fights to make the world a safer place ... and to deliver supplies to her Grandmother.

Here are some character designs I was playing around with.

First off, in my new Werewolf designs, I tried to make them look more like evil muppets or plush toys. I figured that this would suit the cartoony style I'm aiming for a little better. I think the results could be pretty funny ... hopefully in a good way

As for Red, in these new sketches I'm trying out a couple of different body proportions and costume ideas.

I'm trying some different approaches to my image layout. The reason being that my original concept has the majority of the space used up by a big rock and the characters seem to get lost a little.

This first new image depicts the aftermath of a battle between Red and some Werewolves, we see the characters bigger and in the foreground. The second one is more focused on the Red Riding Hood character and shows the Werewolves more as a looming threat in the background.

Also included in this update is my progress on the 3D model for Red Riding Hood. I've got the body base going and extruded some clothing. Lots of refinements to come!

@ jnumber9 : Thanks! I'm glad you like it so far.

Below is the latest on my Red Riding Hood model. I've been working on the clothes mostly. They're inspired from my earlier sketches but I changed a few bits around. The hood and cape still need more work but it's coming along.

          Onward ...

@ ninetynine - Indeed, I noticed that there's quite a few Red Riding Hoods with guns in this challenge so far!

I'm sure that our different approaches and art styles will make for very different pieces in the end, it will be fun to see how these turn out Good luck with yours!

Here is an update on the environment for my scene. I made some some elements and textures that I can re-use in my scene. The textures still need some work but it's a start.

I started blocking out a scene, although she's not finished, I threw my character in there to get a sense how things will look. It's along the lines of my previous sketches but I'm thinking of not having the Werewolves in the scene so that I can focus on just the Red Riding Hood character.

Lastly, here are a couple of ideas where I may take things. One idea has her holding a Werewolf's head as a sort of trophy. In the other, she's just chillin' in the wasteland with her gun and basket.

@Galero - Thanks for dropping by!

I've been away from this for a little while but I managed to make some progress this weekend. The wasteland is on it's way so I'll move on to the textures of the girl and make the missing elements.

At the very least, I need to make her a weapon and a wolf head. Maybe the wolf head will be in a basket if I have time.

@Sylvain - Thanks, I'm glad you like it!

In this update, I got Red Riding Hood's weapon modelled and textured. I based it off a sketch I had posted earlier. I'm no gun expert but I suppose this looks gun-like enough.

I've also made a pass at Riding Hood's textures. I've still got some tweaks to make and maybe rework her hair some more.

There's not much time left so I'm not sure if I'll be able to add more elements to the piece like I had planned. I will aim to at least get her posed nicely with her guns in the scene.

I made one last pass on the model to add some details here and there.

I posed her with her weapon and although I still need to fix a few issues in the skinning, here is a preview.

Lastly, I placed her in the environment to see how it all comes together. There's not a lot of time left so I'll probably have to settle for just the character standing around looking cool. At the very least I'll add some smoke coming from the gun and polish a few things.

Here we go with another update! I worked on the lighting and fixed a lot of little issues. It may be a bit brighter than I had originally intended, but It kinda fits the cartoon look so whatever

I managed to get a funny looking werewolf in the background in the end! The model is pretty simple, I just needed a werewolf-like shape back there stalking the heroine.

Right now the smoke is just a plane with an alpha mask, I may try something with particle smoke if I have time.

Here is my final image. Not too much changed since my last update, I just made some minor polish and played with the framing a little bit.

I also rendered an AO pass and composited it on top to help ground things a little. Lastly, I photoshoped out a couple of minor rendering artifacts.

Thanks to everyone who dropped by and commented! It was a fun challenge
