This sound cool Neat entries so far!

I suck at drawing environments so I think I'll try and enter this one

New to the site, my first challenge here (and I love doing desert/rocky landscapes ). Critique is definitely welcome!

Here's my entry so far, just laying out the colors/shapes for now. I'm thinking something a bit Watchmen-inspired with the crystals, and also featuring a friendly (?) Martian Gerbil ;p

More critiques, friends! Keep the work coming, there is some wonderfully evocative work in here.

Irawan: Out of all of the active CGHubbers on the activity boards, I genuinely think you're the one I could learn the most from ) We have a similar way of working from what I've seen on your most righteous sketchbook thread- lines->greyscale->color.

I'm going to venture a guess and say you jumped straight to color on this one, judging by the sheer saturation of color and those bold strokes of texture. It works to great effect. Compositionally the work is very strong.

I'm not sure if you were conscious of the decision, but the picture is strongly dominated by oval shapes on a diagonal (the crater, mid-ground tripod-walker, the rock your spacebro is sitting on.) I wonder how you feel about taking that stretched-oval into the extreme foreground, whether it be through the shape of another tripod pacing past the viewer's direct line of sight, or through modifying the shape of that extreme texturing of the dark violet. The latter would be tantamount to ''killing one of your babies'' in this piece, I think, but it could make the viewer feel more ''in'' the scene. Of course it is just a suggestion as the picture is already quite strong technically and compositionally.

ScalC: Dark and evocative. The overlay of texture and lights in the background is...well, it reminds me of a jewel. I hope you intend to keep that smoky, dusky light for the final.

Your work reminds me very much of the environments done by a friend and former classmate of mine, a Mr. Sam Burley- Which is a good thing. I think from a technical standpoint you are in a very strong spot.

I think as you work this up to clarity with the lights and darks you should consider adding some defined cast shadows. The rib-cage/architectural note has a nice sense of volume and could be utilized to great effect if you let a little light into the middle ground- Right now that curvature is dominated by more blocky forms, and adding its thin cast shadows could bring more of that effect into the rest of the piece.

      ----

      Moar coming soon frens.

I was thinking about the concept of Mars as one giant industrial city, developing resources for Earth.
