Robobobo, Nice start! what about having some flying stuff at the top right? maybe they are going to land on that nice structure at the left or even attack it

      natzuurjk,
I'm already liking how the colors blend, but it seems you have too much white on the top, perhaps remove some of it or crop the canvas because it doesnt add to the painting.

kemalgunel, Like someone pointed out, you have too much black everywhere and there are places that shouldn't have as they are too far away, I would recommend you to lay in a perspective grid on top and make a block in of values to indicate space between objects, remember that overlapping is the best to create depth! Another tip is if you want to attract the eye to a certain interesting visual place you can create holes, scratches, spikes in the focal points with big contrast,

      TIPS:
-Lay in a basic perspective grid.

-Block in values and silhouettes to create depth and space between objects.

-Avoid using pure white and pure black, instead use some very dark primary/secondary color (black, white, grey are neutral colors and often cause your painting to be muddy).

-Overlapping is a great way to create depth.

      -Avoid tangent lines!!!!

-It's recommended when painting environments to start with hard edges and soften where you want it, but its really up to you in the end.

-Where the edges are harder the more focus it creates, be careful to no over do it if the material is not suited for it.

-Saturation in color is another sucker for creating focal and depth, usually what's closer to you is more saturated then very far away (watch out, this is not always true and there are exceptions).

-If you want to attract the eye to a certain interesting visual place, you can create holes, scratches, spikes, etc in places with big contrast.

Here's a simplified paintover with the points i mentioned above, hope this helps:

tumz, wow that's pretty abstract so far, not sure where i can help you there but keep it up!

For all of you lurkers here, get the ballz to participate and join the fun ride!

EDIT: You guys should explore some plein air techniques, which will help you make very evocative landscapes! make sure to check this out http://www.p-a-p-a.com/members?func=...egory&catid=10

Robobobo, The legs from the dude are too thin compared to his arms, it looks funny at the moment, i recommend to boost his legs with more muscles so that it'll be more proportional with the arms and rest of the body, i would make him slightly taller too, but thats it

C'mon guys don't be shy and join the fun!

        hello ladies and gentlemen!

We have some great, compelling images thus far. I'm going to take some time to give a few critiques for your WIPs:

Robobobo: Hello! A great first offering. The first thing that caught my attention was the quality of your marks/brushes used. The blocks and swaths of color lend a wonderful sense of geometry to an inorganic landscape, and I hope that that sense of order is carried over to your final.

I do like the deeply saturated reds, and I wonder about one thing: I notice in that ''lens flare'' on the top left you have a note of cool blue-violet. I think it represents a nice place of visual ''rest'' in the image and wonder if you might want trying to bring some of that atmospheric cool blue tone into the far horizon/rocks below the foreground cliff. It would break up the deep hot saturation and lead our eye up the path, through the rocks, and to the far horizon. Of course it is just a suggestion, but you might have fun playing with a tone or two outside of the Mars palette to make the image more rich and nuanced.

Natzuurjk: You want to dive right in. I love the colors in this sketch, and how you established a sense of scale and atmosphere in an almost minimalist way. That deep peach cream conjures images of dust-storms that frequent Mars, and lend it a much different feel than ''rocky red mars''- creative.
The use of that big rake brush lends a definite sense of texture and movement, but I would warn against relying on it overmuch as you take this to a final. In areas where the physical brush can be seen (that thinly space area at bottom-left), it can look like an overlay over the landscape instead of part of it. It's a fantastic way to define the middle ground, but I find using the same texture brush throughout a single piece can flatten it somewhat. Not that you are in danger of this right now with the way it is raked and blended, but something to keep in mind. I think it takes a lot of courage to use strong brushes so boldly, so keep it up!

        ------

More crits will be coming up on an edit on this post )
