Question Fan art in a portfolio

    HI everybody!

I am presently trying to revamp my artist portfolio , cause most of the works I have there are quite old.

While thinking about a plan to remake it, I crashed into a problem.

I have tons of fanart work in my hard drive. Actually, some of my best works are fan.arts. And I wonder if it's all right to include fanart pieces in a portfolio to showcase in the industry.

My common sense says "no" but I could use some other opinions.

Please, don't be afraid to critique and express your opinion. It's important for me to do which impression people gets from that display to know how to correct and improve it.

If you want to leave a link to your portfolio, I will be delighted to have look at it.

In my experience, some brand holders love that artists show exemples of their IP's when trying to get work from them. As for fan art in general (eg. not directed only at the company you are sending the portfolio to) it's ok so long as you don't misrepresent the brand (not show Disney characters slaughtering each other) and you are clear it's fan art (that you don't pretend you invented the IP, or were hired to work on it.) After all, Marko Djurdjevic did get his gig with Marvel by doing redesigns of their characters for fun. And I have heard of other similar stories.

        two:

        1.
Fan Art can be a problem when the people that review your portfolio don't have the time or experience to discern how much merit you have on the image.
In simple words Fan Art can sadly miss lead some clueless folks to believe that you are just copying images from other authors
        2.
A different case is if you apply to companies or fields that 'Require' you to perfectly adopt their style (like Disney,Comics ,animations Brands etc).

Maybe the best thing could be to create a section in your portfolio to separate the fan art or to have two portfolios depending of the places you apply?

Very nice portfolio by the way

I think fan art is fine as long as A. Its a disproportionately small part of your portfolio and B. You are not trying to obviously misrepresent yourself as working on IPs that you didn't work on. Some of my favorite work has been artists clever re-imaginings of established characters.
