Default 3D Creature Planets #5 : Greek Monsters!!!

This time around I'm thinking we could do our own interpretations of the age old greek myths.

I am currently working on the game Warriors: Legends of Troy and it deals with the Trojan War. Its in the last leg of the race to get it out but I thought it would be cool to see your interpretations of the monsters of those times!

* please note that the images posted as reference are not concept images of Tecmo-Koei and do not represent any of the designs, characters or creatures in Warriors:Legends of Troy.*

I just googled the names of the creatures and chose some cool designs. You don't have to use these images either I grabbed them to give you guys a head start. You can use these image as reference ONLY, please DO NOT COPY.

That being said you can change and modify the monsters in any way you choose.

Creatures Included :
- Cerebrus
- Chimera
- Hydra
- Harpy
- Minotaur
- Medusa
- Cyclops

other possibilities:

- Echidna
- Scylla the six headed monster (HUGE)
- Kraken (HUGE)
- Nemean Lion
- Pegasus
- Sirens or Nymphs
- Talos the bronze giant
- Fire breathing bull
- Calydorian Boar
- Satyr
- Centaur
- Etc

Pick something you will enjoy modeling and sculpt the hell out of it!!

Any 3D software is allowed and try to use Zbrush to get some hi- res detail in there, I want to see scales, wrinkles, muscles and hair.

Due date is January 30 11:59 pm EST.

GOOD LUCK AND KICK A$$!!

All right then ... something to do with my remaining 13 days of Mudbox. There are limits to how far I will be able to go because my computer is weak, but by painting cleverly I can get into deeper detail than I can sculpt.

Fire breathing bull, nice.

kind of looks like a cow spewing vomit now though.

try to sculpt some character and "menace" into the bull.

make it a hulking mass of muscle and power with a nose ring or emaciate it, make it look like a bag of bones with crazy jagged sharp teeth and googly eyes. push yourself to get out of your comfort zone.

Yeah I know. They pasture bulls out back of my Arizona house about 3/4 of the year so I got some good reference photos. Even regular beef cattle bulls are more awesome looking than that wiener-dog looking Mudbox bull blank. Especially nagging to me is that some bulls have a much deeper chest than this so the lower ribcage angle going toward the loins is much more acute. The muscles mounding up on the bum and shoulders are also much thicker, or at least more angular. The steroidal bulls they ride at the rodeo are completely terrifying.
here are prior studies and a ref photo I can work with.

I was definitely going to give this guy a respectable set of horns and I may add some stylized metallic caps to the points. The brief is for a monster bull, not some punk bull. Maybe I can sculpt some mean looking studs around the outsides of his hooves too.

I'll see what kind of sculpting I can do before my Mudbox trial expires about the 20th. Painting and texturing I have other ways of handling. I saw some people say they had some crash issues with the pose tool in Mudbox so I will probably rig and pose in another program. Him just standing there like that is not very intimidating.

I am seeing what I can do to intensify this guy before I increase the polygons. I'm surprising myself a little bit. I think the time I spent life drawing those bulls might have paid off.

@arttorney Nice progress. The forms in the bull are becoming more recognizable. My critique is to push those polys! Take the move tool/brush and really exaggerate the features that make the bull 's form powerful. Get that silhouette instantly readable. We are working digitally, so dont be afraid to push it too far, because you can always tone it back down, or reload a previous save.
Also, it might help to think about where the bull came from, and what is the source of it's fire powers.

@bdmchugh I think its fine to do a cyborg cyclops, but I would try to keep to the time period. Its very possible to pull it off without making it look space-agey. My first thought was BuBo (BuBo is freaking awesome), the mechanical owl from the old clash of the Titans. One idea is to work in some clockwork type tech with some organic forms.

@karmajf I say go for it, but remember this is the Creature Planet Challenge. It would be AWESOME to see a creature type rendition of the ferryman of souls in the river Styx. Just a thought.

Good luck everyone! Looking forward to seeing some more great work, and some even better improvement!

I'll try to level up a bit Lucid. I only have a few more days on the Mudbox. But at least I can up the polys in that time. Why don't you draw us something?

Edit: I had client stuff over the weekend but my Mudbox still works on the 17th. My 30 day trial goes to the beginning or the end of the 20th. It looks like I have some time to exaggerate, make at least a rudimentary UV map in another program, and bring him back to Mudbox for some skin texture. Hair, I can put on to him later.

I plan to rig him and put him into a stompin' turnin' snortin' pose straight out of bull riding. I'll rig the flames to make them curve as they would as they come out of a bucking turning bull.

        @karmajf good start!

@arttourney ask and you shall receive. below are two sketches I whipped up for you
Also, I should have phrased "push those polys". What I meant was push the limit of the polygons at the lowest level. look at some mid to low poly count game art. Its easier and creates less problems in the future if you work. Create the large shapes on a lower subdivision level and as you need detail, divide the model. Try to keep the poly count as low as you can while still getting the detail you want.

The pose isn't terribly exciting, but here ya go!
