    Illustrated
is proud to present you all with it’s seventh challenge “An Homage to Hayao Miyazaki.
This challenge will offer the opportunity to choose between three of his greatest works:

Princess Mononoke , Howl’s Moving Castle and Spirited Away.

Now remember, the purpose of this challenge is for people to create great pieces for their portfolio, so no fan art! What does that mean? It means that you should be inspired by the world and theme presented by these movies, and illustrate it!

The winner of this round will get to be the banner artist for the Illustrated challenge for a whole year AND get a copy of James Gurney’s new book Color and Light : A Guide for the Realist Painter. This challenge is of epic proportions so we are giving you a month to put out only your best work!

Read carefully below for challenge rules... and let’s make the last Illustrated challenge of the year the best one yet!!

    Rules

    - NO FAN ART: As stated before the purpose of Illustrated is to end up with great portfolio pieces, not fan art. Watch the movie you wish to illustrate from, and be inspired by it, don’t copy it. The worlds of Miyazaki are vast , full of lush enviroments, well developed characters and strong universal themes... it’s enough material to really get into it!

The goal of this Illustrated Activity is to bring a variety of artists together to create their own take on the stories of Miyazaki. As long as your artwork is inspired by Hayao Miyazaki's three great films: Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Howl's Moving Castle, then go for it!

Fan art is more about using someone else's artwork to create your own and that's why it's prohibited here. We don't want to see any swipes of film stills, etc.

    - All types of illustration open. ( interior pages, card formats, book covers, magazine covers), but this WILL be the banner for the rest of the year, so please avoid extreme formats
( like overtly horizontal or vertical banners, etc.).

    - Working File can be any size you want, finals to be no wider than 1000 pixels ( you can include detail shots if you want).

    - Post FINAL image in FINALS THREADS ( to be posted later)

    - Post your progress in this thread! Don't be shy!

    - Bonus: Single Character Illustration on white background!

    Prizes!!

    - Winner gets to be the banner artist for the illustrated challenge for a whole year!

    - Winner gets a copy of James Gurney’s latest book Color and Light!

Ah so sweet, gotta be done!

oh, does no fan art mean we can't use any of the characters from the movies?

No direct copies. If you really love a character you could definitely do a redesign tho, but really try and make it your own.

the goal is to make a painting for your own personal portfolio by using Miyazaki's world as a starting point, that way we don't end up with a copy of something that already exists.

            hope that explains it better!!

                  Hey Guys,

I decided to add Spirited Away to the list of movies you can paint from. It's a beautiful world full of great opportunities for paintings!!
