Default 3D Creature Planet #3, Ch'Thonn

Guidelines: For this challenge we will be focusing on the planet Ch'Thonn. Try to imagine how this creature might have evolved based on its living conditions. For this challenge we will focus on vertebrate, Bi - Quad or Hexapodal. Contestants will have 30 days to complete their design/ 3D Sculpt.

The deadline for this contest is Sunday, November 28th at 11:59 pm Eastern Time [GMT-5].

Minimum requirements for final entry:
• Beauty (posed shot), Front, Profile, and 3/4 render of the final piece
• No poly limit, use any 3D modeling package!!!
• If you make a low poly model, be sure to get some shots of your wireframe. Texture maps/color and turntables are a plus.
• Have Fun!

***~For this Challenge we will get you to do a very quick thumbnail sketch as your design, really spend no more than a couple hours and fire of 3 - 5 thumbnails (quick small concepts).
Post these before moving on to the 3D sculpting phase of the competition, so we have an idea of the types of ideas you have and they may help others in coming up with their own ideas. Think of this challenge as using the 3D software as your Concept tool, starting with a very basic Idea(2d thumbnail) and fleshing it out in the 3D program of your choice ~***

Planet Notes:
Ch'Thonn is a rocky mountainous desert planet with harsh weather and incredibly harsh denizens. The gravity is double that of earths so all the creatures will be heavily muscled and accustomed to either travelling through HOT swealtering, sandy deserts or traversing jagged hazardous mountain ranges.
4 moons and a Red Sun.

Gravity: 2 times Earth
Climate: Hot, desert, mountainous
Dirt Color: red, tan or white sand with grey/ brown rock

Bio Overview: Show your creature in its native environment of Ch'Thonn; a planet that is a desert all year long, with harsh sand storms and too much sunlight. Life is very tough for all inhabitants, so plan out how your design is able to survive the extreme heat/ arid climate. (remember these designs are quick thumbail sketches only for this challenge)

Bio Notes:
Type: Land
Habitat: Sand, rocky hills, jagged mountains, caves. Very little vegetation.
Social: Loners or pack
Temperament: Aggressive.
Activity Cycle: Always hunting... food is sparse and always willing to fight back or eat you first!

Physiological Notes:
Size: Any
Morphology: Symmetrical – bilapedal, Quad or Hexapodal
Skeletal: Vertebrate
Structure and Skin: Heavily muscled with tough leathery skin

The deadline for this contest is Sunday, November 28th at 11:59 pm Eastern Time [GMT-5].

I'm unclear on whether the thumbnails are the whole competition or just a preliminary step.

In this first one, the creature has a front shovel thing like a desert tortoise (for flipping opponents onto their backs).

The second one I consider less plausible because of those skinny legs. I was trying to give them some external hydraulic looking struts but I don't think it is successful. It also looks like an ant, which is an invertebrate. (Sometimes you get some stuff that's not so perfect when making thumbs with Alchemy.)

Default Ch'Thonn Thumbnails

I will be joining this months challenge.

Heres 4 quick thumbs I did up, spent no more than 20 mins on them.

I think Ill sculpt the Rock Climber, and if i have time I might move onto the spiked sand crawler.

Ill start with a basic mesh in Softimage and then do all the sculpting in Zbrush 4.

kryssmen - the rock climber has a 'too normal' silhouette, almost a gorilla, id rather see you sculpt the spiked sand crawler... just my $0.02

Hi all, nice sketches kryssmen, my favourite it's the horned rock stomper

I tried to draw some things, and I think im going to enter with the one it's marked, it's kind like 5meters high, and he moves in 4 legs.

The first image is from SketchUp and the second is after I cleaned it in Meshlab and put it into Art of Illusion.

Kryssmen, your ideas are really cool. I like the sound of desert squatter, it's like a nasty ambush predator!! And when he's done killing you, he, nvm.

ok, so i decided to go with the sandcrawler first. I put a a few minutes into modeling the basemesh for it in softimage. This is a really quick block out with little thought into the line flow. I can always retopologize it later if I plan to rig and animate it.

Ill add the spikes and such later after I have sculpted in details for the body.

      hey didzis, looks good!
you may have some issues around the mouth when you bring it in to zbrush. those large odd angled polygons wont subdivide nicely and you may have some ugly stretching and artifacting. rework the line flow in those areas so that the are as square as possible.

Thanks Kryssmen, I added a few more polys, hope this is better.
