Welcome to the fifth activity here in New Worlds!
THIS IS A SPECIAL ROUND!!! Same rules apply as the rest!

Overall in this activity we we be focused on places rather than people or creatures. These will be the sets, or matte paintings if you like, upon which characters, creatures, or vehicles might play out their respective roles within the broader story line of a game, movie, or art for a print work. My co-moderator and I will present you with a batch of information concerning the setting of a game or story and your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to knock my socks off with your best attempt at drawing that set. I know you can do it!

Until we have a 3D version of this activity, I am willing to accept works that were prepared with 3D programs as long as you pick a single view and export that view to a 2D file format for upload.

(This paragraph basically copied wholesale from Mike Corriero for the plain reason that it makes so much sense): Please don't keep everything a secret, working on your image in private only to post it at the very last hour as a surprise. The point of sharing sketches and work in progress material is so everyone can learn from each other, receive crits, compliments and improve their skills in a classroom/workshop like environment. There are no teachers and no students per se, but try to offer help to others when possible. Please be open to receiving crits, and paint-overs or mock ups of your work, as we are all here to participate, have fun, learn, grow and enjoy what each week has to offer.

AND NOW FOR THE FUN STUFF!

MORDOR!!

"One does not simply walk into mordor" Redesign this hellish landscape show what the movies didnt and what the books left out, i want to see full blown fire brimstone and evil stuff here guys, but the main thing is HAVE FUN WITH IT!

Ends Sept. 15th

    Awesome special round choice.

As a reference for people who want a nice description of mordor, there is a great amount of information, including a ton of geographical information (Thanks to tolkien for being so indepth with the world) on this wiki page:

    also a middle earth map:

      Hey guys,

I'll try to join this one, so here is my sketch. I like the idea of doing the area around "Morgai", with a little hint of the well known lava-hellish-mountains in the distance.

      Comments and feedback greatly appreciated!

That's nice Dario. Are you going to work in any lava or flames anywhere? I can see the stuff in the far background. I meant more like foreground geyser pits or something.

@DarioCoelho: Looks good so far! I agree with what arttorney said about geyser pits. They are a really good way to hint at volcanoes underneath the surface(because the volcano is underneath it!), Yellowstone national park is a good source of reference:

Here's my two attempts so far. I'm not extremely pleased with either one. The composition could be better. I'll probably end up combining the two.

Thanks for the help, guys! Indeed it was missing a lot of drama. I hesitated to go full power on the evil hellish thing, trying to give it another twist, but I guess that's necessary for Mordor after all. So I changed the lightning, a bit of the composition and introduced those geysers you suggested. Thanks for the great reference! I made them not so "aggressive", but I think I'll paint a few spitting that high too.

-eclypse: In terms of composition I like the first sketch, but I really dig the warm/cool play in the second. Your idea of combining them seems to be a good choice, but I'd also think about adding some different terrain. Like a hint of vegetation, paths, a little bit more narrative elements. But then again, it's just a sketch for now. Good start, man!

Awesome topic . I guess this will be my first challenge here then.
After a couple of sketches I decided to go with this one.

            Yeah! Awesome topic indeed .

Man, I love LOTR and I couldn't miss this.

Well, here is a speedpainting of Gorgoroth.

It is said that Gorgoroth was a location with mines and forges which supplied Mordor's armiers with weapon and armor (Lotr wikia). So I will still fill it with some forges through the lava rivers.

One week remains to the deadline. Start, if you haven't started already. Polish 'em up if you have. This has the potential to be the best New Worlds round yet from what I can see.

Great interpretation, Juto! Love the lightning bolts in the sky... some really pissed off wizard waiting there.

Almost done with mine! Just want to add some little building structures and the obligatory wanderer so I can call it finished. But now back to work.
