Welcome to the fourth activity here in New Worlds.

Overall in this activity we we be focused on places rather than people or creatures. These will be the sets, or matte paintings if you like, upon which characters, creatures, or vehicles might play out their respective roles within the broader story line of a game, movie, or art for a print work. My co-moderator and I will present you with a batch of information concerning the setting of a game or story and your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to knock my socks off with your best attempt at drawing that set. I know you can do it!

Until we have a 3D version of this activity, I am willing to accept works that were prepared with 3D programs as long as you pick a single view and export that view to a 2D file format for upload.

(This paragraph basically copied wholesale from Mike Corriero for the plain reason that it makes so much sense): Please don't keep everything a secret, working on your image in private only to post it at the very last hour as a surprise. The point of sharing sketches and work in progress material is so everyone can learn from each other, receive crits, compliments and improve their skills in a classroom/workshop like environment. There are no teachers and no students per se, but try to offer help to others when possible. Please be open to receiving crits, and paint-overs or mock ups of your work, as we are all here to participate, have fun, learn, grow and enjoy what each week has to offer.

AND NOW FOR THE FUN STUFF!

The planet Tirgath Dia, an inhospitable world of tundra and stormy oceans full of floating ice, is home to the Banded Giparous . Certain spheres found on the back of the Banded Giparous are of great value to human kind. From them can be extracted a chemical that serves as a treatment (not a cure) for certain autoimmune conditions including scleroderma and multiple sclerosis. The great profits available to the pharmaceutical industry lure hardy adventurers to fish the deep waters of Tirgath Dia in search of the Banded Giparous. This round we will be drawing their outpost, located on a vast floating sheet of ice.

That's your brief! Have fun! Deadline: 7 A.M. Pacific time, September 1, 2010

This is a great topic this time! Very descriptive. I instantly got an idea of what this might look like, and I like how you tie the other activities in to these.

Thanks. My diabolical plan this time is to stretch everybody's ability to deal with subtle values and textures. There is a subtlety to snow and ice. Here, by the way, is the poll for Round #3: http://cghub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3577

Kovah: Looking good matey. I like what you're doing with the little lamp posts in leading the eye, though your base is a little too far into the distance. It'll be a shame not to see it up close. Hope to see more thumbs!

Natzuurjk: Excellent variety! I'd say #1 is your strongest, though keep an eye on the perspective. I really like the idea with #4! Is that base made out of stranded ships?

The first one is kind of nice, but why not do another three just because it is still early?

      Default Hi!

Kinda quiet around here; nothing to crit.

Well i have been busy on this topic; i did tree more sketches,

      Name: lucian_new_worlds02.jpg
Views: 545
Size: 196.5 KB

and i worked a bit at the first sketch,

      Name: lucian_new_worlds03.jpg
Views: 542
Size: 108.4 KB

although i think to colors where more interesting in the initial sketch.

I think ill gone do one more as the final, using one of the concepts from above but trying a more set-like view and focusing more on nature phenomena.

      Any suggestions?

      Thank you.

        Default Tilt

I would have liked to share some sketches on this topic, but this idea immediately struck me. I couldn't get it out of there so I ran with it.

I envision this outpost being somewhat of an improvised shelter - The very mass of building tilting the entire plane of ice it was built on.

At the same time I wanted to show a sense of balance (I know, terrible joke) between the planet and it's visitors, depicting something that is as beautiful as it is lonely. I liked the idea of the light being the only thing moving in this scenery, as if everything stood still in a very fragile yet somehow comforting way.

I agree this is a great topic. You can do so much with this theme because of the nature of barren whiteness and the way nature can shape and colorize snow/ice/iceberg etc. constantly. Good luck to everyone participating. Ed--

Lucian: I'd say the first one of your last post is my fav so far. There's a lot of good movement throughout your concepts. Just be careful with your use of colour application. There's alot of saturated colours mixed in with what looks like black. Dont be afraid to desaturate/grey your colours Use saturated colours where your focal point lies.

Lake: I like the perspective. Look forward to see where you take it.

Schmoek: Nice colours and values. I would maybe crop some of the ground area away as your horizon line is a little too centre + a lower horizon line would create a better sense of feeling as your sun rises...or sets

My first batch of thumbnail studies. I had the idea to make my icebergs float in the air (inspired very much by the fantastic AVATAR of course). This is shown in the first 3 concepts. I added little ships out on patrol scouting for the Banded Giparous. The last concept is more like a secret facility/base type thingy. Dunno. I do think that whatever idea I come up with it'll feature the outpost built into the ice rather than simply situated ontop of it.
