    Hey guys, been a while!

Hmm what have I been up to! Had a lil RPG contract, some characters, illustration stuff etc, went well! Spent a couple weeks in Ibiza for the closing parties, gah so good, bit of a blur really - always a good sign Played some FF14 online recently, pfff rubbish, last game I play in a while, shame cos I loooved ff11. Bit of a loose end at the moment, doing some studies, anatomy, looking at sunrises for a piece, started character for CGHub challenge - quite a lot more line details needed etc to make it robotic, ill see how it goes.

Worked some on my New World challenge today - developed pain all over my chest, left shoulder and left arm tho, so might have a day off tomorrow><

Some process shots - to sum up! You'll have to cut me some slack cos I've never painted a spaceship or space before and I made up the ship out my head so some sci-fi head will probably have a good ol chuckle at its design hehe.

So - modeled in maya and played about getting camera view and camera lens thingy to the way i liked it. export plain lines to photoshop of the outline of the ship, next noodled in photoshop a while to add some semblence of how the ship might be constructed into parts - added wavey line basically^^ and drew some places where lights/cabins etc might be. Next rendered out ship with basic default lighting so I can start the painting with some volume, a clever person will have decided their light source at this point and setup a dummy lighting setup in maya, but right now I had no idea where the lighting was. Added plain dark background i.e. space colour - darked spaceship to keep a silhouette so now allmost no lighting on ship. Painted in BG in photoshop, obviosuly added the big bright light source, those who know me know I like swirly stuff so it's kinda ofa swirl, spiral comp and try to give the viewer the imagination they're within the swirl too (maybe lol) Once that's in added some highlights to the ship but really keeping the ship dark and a silhouette with minimal lighting. Next added some colour with colour and overlay layers - I looked at some pics by Maxim Revin and Koshime for ideas on colours, turned out blue/green looked much more appropirate than other colour schemes, dont know why! Added some highlights to the thrusters using hardlight layers and colour dodge layers. Used smudge too a bit in places to give some movement.

Still got a few more hours work, mostly on the ships armour or whatever its called, its not quite metallic enough and maybe some more wear-and-tear as its been in space 100yrs apparently! Colour is also very basic only took a few min, might need to mix it up more!

Very interesting looking ship design, especially its organic shapes and those cold blue engine lights.
One thing though, the background seems a bit too active, it takes attention away from the spaceship and makes the painting look a bit flat.
          Keep up the good work.

Updated a picture I did in May "The War Machine" - cant believe its been 5months! - picture I liked enough to go back to and change - what was intended to be a couple hours update turned in to a 12hour marathon, I do prefer the new one though and happier to show it in my gallerys. The main things I wanted to tackle was values/lighting, atmospheric perspective, edges, focus and detail in the right areas, improve colours, maybe get some brush variation, less textured look. The robot has lost some weight in the process!

          Original

          New

Love the improvement on this piece, you pushed it. The birds in both versions are a nice touch, they really give a sense of scale.
