@Kherns: Thanks. Hmm. Looking through my previous stuff it's pretty apparent my hands are damn near huge sometimes...
    This is fascinating.
    I need more studies...

Yeah that's cool, I went in using refrences in my creation also. there was a time I dare to say that I did not need them, and I was damn wrong. What is the most painfull is when you focus on what could be called a default. But Don't worry, I have learned something that is called CTRL/CMD + T, and you know this today saves my life ! Maybe it could save yours ?

Nice colors as always on last piece. Don't be shy to darken your shadows a bit more.

@Kherns: Yeah OK. I try not to use references. Like- I do for things that are like too weird for me to know right then? But I'd much rather try to understand why something looks a certain way because I think that lays a more stable foundation even if it takes tons of time to get *that* thing just right?
Maybe we're talking about different things when we say references though.
Oh, And I DO use Ctrl+T, don't get me wrong. It's a good tool.

And about the shadow darkening thing. Yeah. I tend to forget to really care about the value's brightness when painting and I blindly just gauge how dark something is. Also my monitor is calibrated weird so images looks brighter on other monitors.
If I'd control my values better for each image that problem would become smaller, but I'm still getting a feel for workflow and stuff.

Sorry for the wall of text! :'(

        Now onto something else:

I know what you mean, and don't be afraid cause I love walls of text, those make me practise my english. Yeah for references i understand completly your point of view, it depends on what and how. for calibrating purpose this had crushed y head so many times to get it right cause I can't afford a screen calibrator. For the way I used to be also blind while painting with direct color, this is why I do always black and white stuff before color processing. I do not have any other way for being blindless.

I'm happy for Ctrl+T, I hope I did'nt offend you (with wy "weak" english it's sometimes hard to get the right word ) and yeah it's a good tool. I totally agree. Maybe for values i'm also too used with really strong and dark shadows while before I was afraid of black. this was a weird relationship I had with painting.

While looking the last piece you've done values seems more than ok for me. Should I dare to say they're perfect ? I dare, dare dare double dare me .

Now i can say I'm also sorry for the wall of text.

@Kherns: Yeah, I got myself into the "afraid of black" thing when I was just starting to learn about the pitfalls of painting in general.
I decided to avoid black as much as possible because it's a very common newbie error to use black shadows when black shadows are something to be used very seldom, just because they don't happen that often in real life (because of reflective light and all that good stuff etc). But I've come to understand more of when to apply such techniques.

And working from grayscale is, if applied correctly, a good way to get the ground running with controlled values, but I find that with careful thought one can paint straight in color, and control the values from time to time by desaturating the image to see what values are being read by the eye.
Just another way to get the job done, but without painting in grayscale first.

Also: "perfect" is a very, very rare thing, so let's just call the values "better".

            Just two very quick drawings...

Something newwww. Keep in mind, this is my first attempt at combining a character, a vehicle thing and an environment.
It's about time to start composing images with something else than just characters on empty backgrounds...

              Hey there,
              Goooood updates!
And its good to see you start with composition!
Last post looking good so far - take care about the light direction and the values. (background bright and a minimum contrast/ foreground dark and high contrast).
But thats just my 2 cents

              Cheers and keep it coming!

I agree with Malo. Take also care of the perspective, This is a good start to see how things work together, I'm quite sure you'll make it. Always nice color palette.

                  @malo: Thank yoooou!
Hmm yeah. I hadn't thought of that before now... But I recall that I once observed that in a picture a while back thinking that it was a neat "trick" and that I should learn how to use it, thanks for reminding me!

@Kherns: Yes yes... Perspective is a tough nut to crack, but I'll keep at it. Won't get far without that fundamental knowledge anyway so can't avoid it forever.
And thank you, I try to maintain an interesting contrast in my images as far as color goes, that's what keeps the eye entertained. ... I think...

Anyway, back to some standard fare concept art, I've got some ground to cover in creatures for a game I'm working on.

These two are quick, so I didn't have much brain-power focused on values and such...

                  More to come!

                      @Kherns: Ah, no need to congratulate, man. It's just something I do, I work on my hobby-projects right now. Indie games... ^^;

Anyway, some new stuff. Two concepts and one rendered:

Two very quick paintings from tonight (well technically, last night).
