Default New Worlds #2 - Boneyard

If anybody's confused about what this activity is all about, feel free to PM me.
<> Follow the brief. Of course there's always room for your interpretation of the brief.
<> Color or black and white are both OK
<> Digital or traditional media are both OK
<> All skill levels are welcome here. We can all stand to get better but we only improve if we try.
<> We accept only finished artwork that was made for this activity.
<> Please only one entry per episode per participant.
<> If possible prepare a voting thumb like they do in the other activities.
<> Have fun, above all else!

Overall in this activity we we be focused on places rather than people or creatures. These will be the sets, or matte paintings if you like, upon which characters, creatures, or vehicles might play out their respective roles within the broader story line of a game, movie, or art for a print work. My co-moderator and I will present you with a batch of information concerning the setting of a game or story and your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to knock my socks off with your best attempt at drawing that set. I know you can do it!

Until we have a 3D version of this activity, I am willing to accept works that were prepared with 3D programs as long as you pick a single view and export that view to a 2D file format for upload.

Please don't keep everything a secret, working on your image in private only to post it at the very last hour as a surprise. The point of sharing sketches and work in progress material is so everyone can learn from each other, receive crits, compliments and improve their skills in a classroom/workshop like environment. There are no teachers and no students per se, but try to offer help to others when possible. Please be open to receiving crits, and paint-overs or mock ups of your work, as we are all here to participate, have fun, learn, grow and enjoy what each week has to offer.

BRIEF
Planet Tarasio used to be a lush planet full of life, but after years of continus wars and harsh enviroment changes the planet began to die and become a wasteland. All life on the planet began to die off, those that survive when its close to thier time seem to flock to a particular spot. This spot is littered with bones from every kind of species.

The sentients that still live have formed a cult around worshiping some kind of death deity and have taken up residence in the 'Boneyard'.

your job is design the boneyard, what kind of creatures go there to die? are the bones aligned in some special way? Have fun with this idea and any problems or questions feel free to ask

I Like the 2nd thumbnail undeadartist.

Did thumbnails to join the fun, but not satisfied with them yet, will do some more, i think they are kind of boring right now. Trying to come up with something more interesting.

To me, possibly all too strongly reminiscent of Pitch Black, but if this works for you I have some excellent pictures in black and white of a travertine natural bridge near Payson, Arizona I can provide for ref.

update on one of 'em. I'm not completely sold on this idea; I'm still really into the rooftop one, but who knows what could happen, right?

Hey boys and girls sorry for my disapearance i had to make a small trip out of town today and just finally now got around to commenting on here. Internet at my house was kinda touchy yesterday so finally got it all worked out, havent gotten a chance to work on more but im going to be working on em all day tomorrow.

Lake: Awsome man really like the medieval touch on it, that was something i was hoping you guys would kind of go with is try different eras of tech for this planet, Really diggin 3,and 4 though the only problem i have with 4 is i would really like to see more bones over the landscape.

Fetsch- Yea man im really diggin number 3 on that cant wait to see what comes from this one!

Arttourney-Keep up with it man, just a question i have been wondering what program are you using btw? But keep up with it just make sure you give some of them shapes some depth, but you prolly already know that

I started out with some blobby shapes I made in Alchemy and I have been beating up on them with the GIMP. I'm really mostly making a background layer at the moment and the drawing will probably grow more realistic as I stick some bone piles in there I'm going to try to make with SketchUp this week.

Edit: I actually might not finish since I will be doing a critical patent infringement hearing in another state for four days starting tomorrow.

my bone yard will be really sunny with white beaches. My idea is crushed bones are created this white sands (I am still thinking on how to imply that in illustration) those red guys on the air will be alien vultures . I also need a dying animal i guess.
