Here are some good character tutorials. There's Plenty more but I'll just kick it off with this

If you go here : ImagineFX Workshops there are plenty of good IFX tutorials available for free online

    Character Tutorials

Effective Character Design : A Guideline of what creates a good character

Jason Chan - Painting A Gothic Beauty

    Character Speed Painting

Painting a believable figure something which is essential to character design

    Creating an Orthographic view

    Paint a heroic valkyrie

    Face Painting Process

    Inspiration, Fashion and Reference

Characterdesign.com Filled with references, tutorials and just loads of character related stuff

http://www.hel-looks.com/ : Loads of fashion and a mixture of dress styles

http://photogallery.filmofilia.com/ : This is a movie stills gallery, I think it's a pretty huge inspiration since almost all movie characters are designed to a high level.

That's all for now, I'll post more when I think of some
    Hope it helps somebody

      Default Hello

I know there is a method to draw the light and dark first in grey scale and only then color it. Do you know of any tutorials that can show me how its done?

      Thanks

I keep a lot of reference material online here. *note* I've tried to give credit to the artists when I know their identity, if you see one mislabeled or missing a label, and you can ID the author, please let me know"

There are a few tutorials here and there that you might find after scouring the web, but if I may offer you some advice that I was given once regarding this topic:

One of the most important things involved in working out the values for your image in grey scale is to paint with strong regard to surface materials and keep your values close.

A good way to start is to gather photo ref of things you would like to paint, make them black and white in Photoshop, and then proceed to study them closely. Zoom in until you're only looking at huge pixels if you have to, just make sure to pay attention to the subtlety of the value changes in the photos. Above all else, DO NOT COPY the photographs. You must try and learn from them and apply what you've learned to your own work. It will take time to get the hang of it, but if you keep at it, it will begin to make more sense and you will begin to see vast improvements in your own work.

        Hope that helps.

If you use Corel Painter, one method I use is digital watercolors, which are great for spreading your colors lightly and build them in value and saturation. It saves me a ton of time.
