Heya!
You said you wanted critique so I though that I'd share some of my thoughts. As the previous poster mentioned, you got some good character designs here, like the mohawk-dude. It's always good to study more anatomy, one thing I noticed is that the legs are a bit too short and the torsos are a bit too long. As far as grayscale goes. I'm curious: When you add colour to a grayscale character, do you ultimately paint over the grayscale on a normal layer using colours or do you add overlay layers etc and tweak hues to get the colour in? I think that the grayscales could have more difference in value, right now its very much gray and not that much highlights and shadow for example. If you apply more of that in the right places you can make the characters pop out more. More of a suggestion though People have different painting styles after all. Lot of text from me here, but you should check this out: http://www.photofriday.com/calibrate.php You can calibrate you screen there so you get correct values, did this yesterday and it helped...a lot! Keep grinding man! ![]() |

doing some progress. Ive been busy With some challenges here on CGhub and also some personal studies which are mostly just scribles so i won't bother posting those.
What i got today is a "almost" done still life study half from imagination (Trying to picture the glass in the right perspective was an ass.) And my WIP for the Characterforge Entry "The Survivor". Go check it out for a character description! I tried really hard to make the character believable and tried hard on storytelling through the pose and facial expression. Enjoy and feel free to point stuff out, i'll be glad if you do. Thanks. |

nice updates man! Diggin the colorvariations and these loose strokes in that last book study.
I am not too sure about the characterdeisgn just yet. the pose and the expression look kinda interesting but the design itself is a bit "meeeh" right now, just try to push it a bit more. Make it more interesting without getting too crazy (so that it still fits the description), think fresh and don't get too caught up in "standart"-stuff everybody has already seen. you know, when designing characters which are more of the "average" or "non hero" type but still have the ROLE of a main character you gotta push it even more because it has to look interesting, though not tooo crazy without ending up with something boring. in other words, you gotta push "subtle" designs to the absolute max ![]()

hey gloom, thanks for leav ing your opinion! I'll be doing more color studies soon when i get back home and finish that character design. Are you sceptical about the big or smaller shapes of design? Because, i'll definetly will go into the smaller shapes (im thinking of the shoulderpads, some stuff on the chest etc) but i don't think i can redraw the whole suit.

Ok so i have to give you credit, Gloom, you totally fucked up my mind.I just spent about 5-6 hours (i shit you not) trying to redesign this piece of shit. I noticed that its the upper armor piece that is making trouble so I spent all this time trying different variations of it. (i have 60 layers right now. I had 15 when i started.) but at the end i had this crazy (durr) idea to completely remove it and whatd'ya guess, now i can live with it. Now he looks more like a handyman he should look like rather that black mesa scientist. I have to admit i let myself inspire from Gordon too much. I hope you people like the new idea. I can't think straight right now after this intensity (i literally have sweat buckets over this) and now it's 2:51 am here and my brain hurts and im also so pumped i won't sleep just yet so i might aswell go jogging or something. Hooray for Critism. Now you know why i need it. Keeps me going..yeah..
I'll throw in a pencil sketch for this update. Enjoy. |

yepp I think its better now. simply by pushing the dark shapes more, the design looks more interesting. I always try to think in abstract terms in the beginning of such a design. you know, the balance between light/dark round/edgy and so on, after having an kinda "abstract" version of shapes and values down I look further to push it into a functional design. now keep going man, always stay focused and never forget: everything should make at least SOME sense
