Hey guys. I'm new to painting and so on. Here's my work.I'm just trying to paint a head. Focusing on values and so on. So, I kept trying and this is what I got. Man I suck. I'm pretty new, so any type of advice would be appreciated.

I read somewhere that it's good practice to work on a single piece for a couple of days. I've been working on this for close to 12 hours(I have way more failed attempts), and though I've made improvement, I'm stumped.

Should I work on some value studies before tackling this again?

                  Khar,
The painting looks good. It appears that you already have a good sense of how to depict form. What I think needs a little help is the drawing ( the relationship of the features and their perspective) and simplification.

When you are starting to learn how to paint especially a complicated form like a head i suggest you work with a strong single directional light source (This goes for working from your imagination too) . Your painting appears to be lit by an overcast sky or lit by a flash from a camera. Things seen under these lighting conditions appear flatter and make for very difficult subject matter.
When you are constructing a head you should treat it like architecture. Every form (feature) should relate to each other in the correct perspective. This should all be figured out in the initial line drawing. As your skills progress you will need less and less construction lines and begin making quick notes. In the beginning though spend time on the drawing and understand what it is doing in space. this will come in handy when you begin to paint.

I recommend doing Values studies from your favorite artist and from well lit photos. You want your studies to be from a strong directional light source.

Don't beat yourself up we all have to start somewhere and we are all learning.

Hiya, I've only recently joined the cghub forum for this very thread XD
I was wondering if anyone could have a look at this... ?

I know there are still many things that need much working on, but what bothers my are the back muscles >_<
I couldn't find any appropriate reference and in truth I really have no clue how back muscles are supposed to work.
I'd be very grateful if anybody could point me to a good anatomy manual over at amazon or any relevant tutorial/in depth explanation on the internet.
(It's a Kingdom Hearts fanart by the by.)
                    Thanks

@ Whoknowswhatitis: I just plain don't think you can cross-link images from other parts of the site like that. I think you need to use the green paper clip square attachment manager to upload the image again in a post here for us to see it.

hi Theodora/dorutza your traditional skill is amazing and seem to be you don't have any problem with anatomy,
                      and your rendering is awesome.

the question is, did you draw the body first before you did the armor?

because i dont see the bone or right contruction on your character,i did quick sketch for you base on your character.

i hope thats help you a bit to figure out your character design.

Awesome thread with a lot of great critiques! This is my first time posting in the cghub forums, to be honest.

I'm currently working on a personal piece. Here are my really rough sketches of the idea I have in my head.

I wanted to make an artwork that tells a story, sort of like a scene from a fantasy novel. A young man and a girl (possibly an elf, still haven't figured it out at this point) were stuck in a deep pit where they had to retrieve an ancient artifact (guy is holding the artifact which I have yet to design). Eventually they get surrounded by evil creatures who reside there. To escape, the young man uses his enchanted ring to summon a glowing, magical bird that lifts them off to safety.

My problem is figuring out which is a better composition and/or what other improvements I can make to make it more visually interesting before proceeding with tightening it. Feel free to tinker with them any which way you want!

I look forward to learning and growing in this community
