Smile Journey of a Beginner: Paintings and Sketches

Hello guys. So I'm starting with drawing, but I really suck at it. I know that you had few times these questions or posts here, but I really couldn't find them (I couldn't decide where to post this, so if is in a wrong forum sorry.). I'm 18 years old (more info in this post) and I would like to go for 3D but a lot of people told me that it's better first to learn how to draw (at least skecthes etc.) and then go for 3D, so that will help me a lot.

Also people told me that it's not everything in talent, and that there are some people who learned how to draw, so this gave me inspiration to do it.

As there are a lot of nice artists here (GordonTarpley rocks ) I thought if you have any advice to share with me. Where to start, what to do etc.

I was looking for books and I found those:
1. "Figure drawing for all it's worth"
2. "Fun with pencil"
3. Jacques Fresco video tuts on youtube.
4. "Perspective made easy"
5. "Drawing on the right side of the brain"

So can you direct me in the right direction.

Thanks!

P.S. Forum is really nice, I love bright colors.

Welcome to CG Hub.

Learning art has little to do with talent. Prior to the late 1800's a female's education was pretty much limited to art, sewing, music, English, etc. Talent usually relates to creativity, concept or speed of adaption/understanding. For a starting point I recommend anatomy and landscapes.

CG Hub members have started a thread to collect tutorials and other ways to help improvement. ConceptArt has a pretty massive list of references for use, too.

Tutorial Thread
Skin Tones
Character Design Process

Crimson Daggers is highly recommended. The stream takes helps challenge people with everything from portrait, to landscapes, still life and masters. It is an easy way to get and stay motivated. As well as a way to keep track of your improvements

Ps - I'd ask a mod to move this thread into either Art Discussion or Education. As Sequential/Storyboard implies comics, draft work for screen, animation, etc. You may get more response in those forums.

Good luck.

Oh, thanks Saline I didn't see that forum, contacting moderator now.

Yup the CD is pretty cool but as I'm finishing final exams I don't have time to follow them so for now (1 month) I'll do only fast and easy sketches.

So I was shopping yesterday and I got this:

500 x A4
1 x HB Pen

So here are first images. Did them before going to bed in about 15 minutes.

#1 Parfume

#2 Pen

Today more to come.

Reading Loomis' book "Succesful drawing" and I like it. I'm on the perspective now. I also paid 1$ for trial www.drawing-online-tutorials.com and it's nice but I kinda don't like it, dunno why. Here's the work of the last two days:

P.S. Can you recommend me what to draw besides following Loomis' book? I really dunno, cup and mobile phone are "too" easy and I draw them fast.

Thanks!

Sketching a horse.

Scribbling and trying different tones.

@Cyberlink2

Thanks mate.

-----------------------------

So here is more of the work. As I said, I'm following Loomis' book "Successful drawing" and I'm training perspective.

Sketched the body from the book. Arms are too small.

Doing some squares here, trying to draw with the wrist, not with the fingers. Is that ok? Do you draw like that?

Also do you rotate your paper when drawing?

Starting with perspective, not going well.

Odd squares.

Tried to make big one, but still odd.

And I finnaly got it!

Here's with more squares, first one is too big. So here is how I draw it in perspective. I draw two lines from first VP, two from second VP and then I got the square. After that I put 3 dots above this square where the edges of the top should be. Then I draw more lines from VP that are going trough this dots, and that is all. Is this way ok?

Drawing a cricle inside.

An odd cylinder.

Then I saw that in every square a edge is in front of me, so I get that the first edge, and the last one are in the same line (don't know if you get me ). The second square is that I looked for.

That's all. Any advices, or suggestions?

So continuing with perspective.

Trying to do the simple cube, but I'm getting mad.

Finnally got what is the problem.

Trying with rulers, not going well.

Once again, no ruler, good one.

Quick one.

Doing cylinders and a sketch of sphere, but it's too small.

Trying a big sphere, looking odd.

Trying with rulers, didn't make the VP and perspective and I got - sh**.

Then I found how to draw a cube in one VP perspective. Done it!

Doing some two VP cubes.

No rulers.

Finnaly, the sphere looks ok.

Doing some normal stuff.

Coffe cup in PS.

-------------------------------------------------------

Any suggestions, advices? One question, can there be more than two VP on one object?

Thanks!

Hey Aerendyl! I see you're working hard! I'll throw some advice in if that's alright. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, draw! Draw all of the time, take your sketchbook everywhere and observe! Draw with your eyes, and you'll begin to get things down accurately. Don't start out with details first: always start from general to specific. Get the shapes down first, then start building from there.

There will be times when you feel that your aren't going anywhere, but fight through those feelings and you'll start to see improvement. Learn from as many people as possible, stay in these forums, look at art all day, order as many art books as possible... You'll improve greatly if you stick with it. DONT GET DISCOURAGED! Hope this helps, and keep it up!

You should probably start a thread in the sketchbook section. That's where this sort of thing belongs.

Its pretty normal to not get replies straight away, but you're not doing it for the replies are you? At least you shouldn't be.
Think of your sketchbook as a way for you to keep track of your own progress instead, and along the way some people will drop by and offer advice.

Keep it up! You've got the right idea

Thanks mate. Yes I'm drawing everywhere, and when I can. I'm atm finishing High School, so I have a lot of final exams to take, so I have little time for drawing. But when that is over, I'll try to draw +6h a day.

Doing more sketches on light.

Getting angry here.

I tried to draw Loomis' girl, but it's awful!

This is more of a black girl, then a light study. :S

New bottle, I tried to make as accurately as I can.

Here's what I got:

Just watch first bottle, second one was quick.

P.S. I got new printer + scener, so now my images will be a lot better.

@AlexTooth

Thanks Alex, your comments are always appreciated!

-----------------------------

So as I said, this week was a really busy one, and had little/no time for drawing. But yesterday and today I did few more Coca - Cola bottles, trying to draw them accuratelly as much as I can. Each took me around hour, hour and 30 min.

Still busy with school so I didn't have time to upload something. Here are the sketches from this week.

Tried to draw squirrel from a reference photo, ninja too.

Did a fast shading of an "orange". After, tried to make some circles but crap.

Dog from Loomis book, tried to be precise and draw what I see, not what I know.

This one I think is "cool". First I decided not to draw on my table, but to use a "sketchbook" with hard cover, and to put it under 45 degrees. I felt more than natural, and it was kind of easy. Will get next week a sketchbook without this lines.

As a lot of artist suggested me to draw from references but I dunno what to draw. Any suggestions what to draw? Should I enter a word into google and draw what first comes?

Also any advice on how to draw very nice circle? I start to draw it and then I get lost. :S

Thanks!

Ok, I got finnaly a hard cover sketchbook, yay!
Searched yesterday all town for Copic or other kind of pens but nothing.

As AlexTooth recommend to me, I'm drawing just with lines, no shadow or other things.

This su**! :S

Draw a scissors on sharpener for pencils. I think it looks "ok". :S

Need to get pen as soon as possible, I just think that I'll be more accurate and cleaner with a pen.

Ok after yesterday's "holiday" I'm starting now drawing everyday, constantly.

So here are real-life line sketches from today:

Shrek

Some apples and my iPhone -

More apples and a "stick" -

Look at my table, cleaning it instantly when I come back to home after the school!

Technical question - is this good spot to draw? So I draw like that, paper on the table and thing in front of me, light above me.

Thanks!
