What you're supposed to do, in bullets.
- Update the look for a modern audience. Retro touches ok.
- John Carter of Mars wiki
- Front Cover Only - psd template below. (now attached)
- Working file can be any size you want, finals to be no wider than 1000 pixels (you can include detail shots if you want).
- Post FINAL image in FINALS THREAD (to be posted later).
- Cover design is up to the artist - you can use the template, or design your own. (Keep it the same dimensions, though).

Please don't keep everything secret, working on your image in private only to post it at the very last hour as a surprise. The point of sharing sketches and work in progress material is so everyone can learn from each other, receive crits, compliments and improve their skills in a classroom/workshop like environment. There are no teachers and no students per say, but try to offer help to others when possible. Please be open to receiving crits, and paint-overs or mock ups of your work, as we are all here to participate, have fun, learn, grow and enjoy what each week has to offer.

Sounds really interesting, will make the effort to participate in this 1 and not dive in at the last minute like before!! I hope I'll be able to participate in this one. I just want to check: should it be a cover that represents the whole series based around the John Carter of Mars character, or a cover specifically for the 11th book in the series - the one called 'John Carter of Mars', that consists of two short stories?

I would assume we'd use 'a princess of mars' since i think you need to know the rest of the stories to portray whats going on there...imho i think its safe to say any barsoom story with John Carter in it would suffice.

Couldn't resist. As soon as I heard about this I put this together. I'd need to edit it a bit to make it fit the format, but this is what came out on the first pass.

That should be fine. For this round, since I failed to specify, you can do a "series cover" or focus in on any of the stories you happen to favor.

Also, psd template is now attached, but feel free to create your own cover design.

I was at a talk by Iain McCaig yesterday and he showed a whole bunch of his John Carter of Mars work, and it blew me away (no surprise there of course), so this seems perfectly timed!

first STS...lucky me i'm doing some concepts for my portfolio based on john carter so this should come in handy =)
had about an hour or two to do these quick comps...not sure if anyone but myself can read them...

Here's some rough character studies - always find it more interesting to come up with the costume/character designs before i do a comp.

I'm not happy about john's costume tho, might change it too something ala an ancient spacesuit thingy...in all the barsoom covers he's scantily clad (looking like tarzan, which is no coincidence)
I'll give his character another shot tomorrow i think, and a few comp. ideas too
