    Default 3D Jam #4 : Rim Lizard - groBoto

Created this guy yesterday as a sketch for the 'Every Day An Hour' thread over on CGS... saw some potential and thought... why not toss him into the mix at the Bust A Move challenge (I have another entry going -- 'Kione Anddroid Navigator').

Breaking away from a piece -- giving it room to breathe -- is always healthy. Bouncing between these two will allow me to do that.

A 'self-guided-scribble' -- no concept beyond 'something reptilian' when I started. Intend to continue in that vein -- let the piece find its own path (the way I usually work, even when there is a more specific goal defined.)

At this point 'stylized and sculptural' are notions I'm playing with.

    Best Wishes,
    Darrel

Dmitrij - Thanks, I've seen your work on ZBC -- Excellent technically, but I most admire the depth of presence/expression/emotion your characters and portraits.

An update on the Lizard -- a second quick ZBrush session. Overall adjustments to proportions and volumes. Refining some of the forms, and a tiny bit of detailing.

        Best Wishes,
        Darrel

Thanks neozerahan... this one is all about play and exploration -- not taking it (or myself) too seriously.

This was a quick splashing of my favorite 'sculpting alpha' in ZBrush. It's an alpha I created in GroBoto a while back -- produces really interesting things with the Displacement Brush.

I know it's too much... I'll either selectively pull back with the Morph Brush, or just start again from scratch (takes just a few minutes). May try creating some new, similar alphas. But generally, this is the direction I'd like to go -- abstract/decorative/sculptural.

            Teeth are just initial/temporary geometry.

            Best Wishes,
            Darrel

Everything still WIP (or as I tend to think of it... WIF -- Work In Flux).

Dialed back the displacement on the head/bust... fair number of sculpting tweaks there too.

Whipped up a stand in GroBoto. Still test-fitting and balancing everything -- minimal sculpting on the stand.

Included a brief visual description of edge loop masking based on GroBoto meshes and special UVs (more examples and info in my ZBC sketchbook thread).

              Best Wishes,
              Darrel

Great to see the Jam really heating up as the deadline approaches -- great stuff.

Found a bit of time for the Lizard. Just some clean-up and detail sculpting as I continue to both exploit and dial back the complexity created by the base geometry and ZB deformations.

Trying out a MatCap -- since I plan on a cavity-sensitive metal patina for the finish, it's important to sculpt with one in place -- informs the sculpting choices.

                Best Wishes,
                Darrel

WIP - More overall reshaping -- bringing in some large abstract/stylized forms -- some work on the base as well.

Almost a wrap here (shown without stand in these images).

I've tweaked the sculpt a bit -- now setting up materials and lighting.

                      Default Rim Lizard - FINI

I'm calling this one done -- Just simple ZBrush renders (neither tools nor time for anything else).

...now on to finish my other entry 'Kione'.

                      Thanks for tuning in.

                      Best Wishes,

                        Default Rim Lizard - FINI-ReThink

Realized I lost something along the way... originally chasing a simpler, decorative style... fluid abstract forms. Got caught up in too much sculpting, reworking, and detailing.

So... I've gone back and reworked the sculpt from an earlier state... will make this my actual finish. Still need to fix/finish a few things... but this is very close. Will post final images later today.

One of the most liberating and powerful aspects of digital tools... the work remains forever malleable. Can be a liability if used to rework, drill, and detail a piece to death (the trap I sort of fell into there) -- but should simply free one up for endless, fearless exploration.

                        Less is More,
                        Best Wishes,
                        Darrel
