I remember hearing good things about wacom bamboo tablets, they are small and cheap (compared to other wacom products), but I don't own one, so I really have no idea how good they are for painting.

Bamboo is good, though the newest Trust-tablets are good also, and alot cheaper. I have a Trust right now that, after five years of SERIOUS abuse, is giving up... I'm talking spilling coffee, children that use it for tug-o-war, pets biting on it etc etc...
If you go for something in the end, you should try it out first if you got a chance..wacom generally have a certain "feel" to it, and since you already use a wacom it might be weird to use something else... if so- Bamboo is your winning option. Otherwise I'd reccomend Trust any time...
