I just noticed the deadline for Storytellers and the Sketch Jam is (almost) the same this go-round. Will that eventually shift? Not sure if it matters, really! Just thought I'd mention it. Keep up the great work, man!

Thanks for the heads up on that. That was an oversight on my part o___o

If it truly becomes an issue, we can extend the deadline out a little bit.

    Best,

Question from the Round 1 thread:

Would it be easier for everyone if a brief outlining a scene from the story were provided instead of just working from the book/story?

    Thanks!

Hi! I think it could be easier, but that that's not necessarily a good thing in terms of creativity or insight...kind of like writing an essay based on a novel's CliffsNotes. I personally love the additional challenge of reading the book and the more complex interpretations that will bring. Plus, the wikipedia link you gave gives a pretty detailed summary. Perhaps including an evocative passage in your initial description to encourage people to read more?

With the Mythology jam running near-identical dates, as quickreaver pointed out, I had to choose one or the other...if not, I would have tried to do both. Throwing short stories into the mix might encourage more participation, too.

I think the synopsis works fine - you can always pick out areas you might want to read up on from it.
You have provided all the info we need, it's up to us to use it (synopsis and the book, what more do you need?)
Although character descriptions might help - if you can't be bothered to scan read for them.

usually a quick look at wikipedia or other source is enough of a summary i think. plus it seems to me that most book covers take a lot of liberties with story elements anyway (at least with the older stories), so a few inconsistancies dont seem like that big of a deal.

Yeah, I feel the way this comp is being run is great; use the Wiki if you want a quick overview, or read it if it takes you I think it's nice not limiting it.

I'm reading it as I come up with ideas, but I don't feel like reading it is necessary, either. Just helps me

I didn't know the challenge would be based on a book, don't really have the time for that, but as stated earlier I think the wiki is enough to get some good ideas and images going. I don't think a scene outline is necessary though
Thanks for a cool challenge S! Hope to come up with something this week.

Well i think what would rather be usefull is a little style guide, not a synopsis of the story. That should be our research part, as designers and illustrators we should search for that and more that could influence our depiction of the cover. A style guide is something that is comunicated or even written to us by the client..

So, for the most part, it sounds like what we've got is enough. I'll try to include more reference if possible and if avalable. I know from my own work having a pile o' stuff to pull from is always helpful, so.

Mix, you actually touch on something that I have been entertaining the idea of. I have a bot program that I can set up as "The Art Director." Art Director Says ...It would be easy to set up a random style guide each round - it would be optional, and just for fun.

              Best,
              ~S

Hey Oregano, Concerning the first activity template - are we allowed to tweak the text at all? not that it doesn't look great already, totally dig the font and the layout is perfect. Just wondering if any texture or style variation is allowed on the text itself? Not that it's needed, just to go along with the cover a bit better.

Well, you can mess with it if you want, but that's not really the point of Story Tellers

Just make sure you include a blank version of your entry as well!

Is there an exact time for the deadline? I'll probably have to work on my entry until the last minute, so everyone counts. So is midnight, the 24th the deadline? Or end of 25th? Which time zone counts? I'm currently in berlin.

Sorry if this is answered somewhere else and I missed it, but maybe I'm not the only one wondering...

                  Thank you!
