Leion - This list of topics you see here are just suggestions. This thread is set up for people to post suggestions for topics, and once the actual weekly topic goes up, that's where you would post rough thumbnails, sketches, work in progress and final art. The first week hasn't started yet but it will start soon.

A separate thread will be created for people to post their Final art in, for voting, further discussion, crits, compliments etc.

    yay, when does this start?

    Poisonous Grumbly Toad
    Black-Eyed Shifting Lizard
    Ringed Piercing Bird
    Bubble Beater

Or more open ended topics that focus on a specific feature or behavior. I can see this practice being beneficial in multiple ways, most notably, it would help us in creating creatures that are needed to accomplish a specific purpose/action within a game or story.

    deadly tongue
    hypnotic eyes
    nests in trees
    sticks head in the ground
etc., Im too lazy to think of more .

Thanks for all the topic suggestions, it's going to help out a lot.

Goog - I'm going to try and find some time tonight to get a couple things out of the way. Perhaps the first topic will go up Saturday night, or Sunday night (EST) USA..unless something comes up unexpectedly.

Good idea. That's the sort of thinking I have in mind with the categories that will be paired with topics. Seeing as how a lot of reading and research general deter people from participating I'm going to watch how heavily worded a couple of the topics are for the first few weeks. Though varying topics as you suggested providing the creature with a specific purpose and how that purpose is designed and carried out would be interesting and a lot of fun. A few challenging topics like that will come into play. Thanks for the suggestion.

This is a list of some terrains and habitats that may come in handy as well. I'm pasting it here for my use as well as all of you. Some may seem like repeats, and others are more segregated than may need to be but it will help. This could help with topics as well as just help broaden your design spectrum. Please add to the list if you can think of others.

    Terrain, Environment & Habitat:
    Subterranean
    Aquatic
    Sky
    Swamp
    Deep Sea
    Cave
    Snow
    Ice
    Lava
    Space
    Shore
    Rock
    Magma
    Dunes
    Cliffs
    Desert
    Polar
    Arctic
    Savannah
    Grasslands
    Prairies
    Tropical
    Rain forest
    Woodlands
    Tundra
    Taiga
    Wetlands
    Marshes
    Ponds
    Rivers
    Lakes
    Coral reef
    Tide pool
    Mountains

    EVOLUTION CHART
You know those evolution charts that show an ape turning into a human? What about doing a similar thing, like 10 silhouettes showing the evolution of one creature into another?

    MR. CREATURE HEAD
Similar to Mr Potatohead, but a collection of "creature parts" in similar scale, and perspective. Like 10 sets of legs, arms, body pods, that can be rearranged and interchanged so artists focus on developing limbs, and assembling them.

Titanic Stargazer- maybe with a focus on anatomy of stargazing apparatus.
Hill Crusher- show genders or multiples in a pack etc
Flower Invader- show different life stages or maybe different subspecies for different flowers

          A quick suggestion:

          Transformation- before and after

Some creatures have evolved elaborate ways to transform themselves in response to all sorts of situations. Examples include peacocks, frilled lizards or pufferfish. Some transform to attract mates, others to deter predators or to establish dominance among others of their kinds.

The challenge is to design a creature which is characterized by it's transformation, showing a before and after view.

Most of my ideas are kinda open ended....

Apex Predator - open to interpretation - must show species that influence this animals behavior.

Mother - Show the relationship between a female of a species and her offspring.

Scavenger - open to interpretation - must show other species that influence this animals behavior.

The mythical world maker: Draw, no, bring to life a creature that could be the reason why we have the world that we do now, whether it be mountains, the sky, war, peace, sex or anything.

Prominent Scene: Draw the creature during an extremely critical moment in its life like birth or death.

Aquaculture Staple - [insert random alien]'s favorite sea food, designing both domestic and wild form

Unique Killing Method - instead of the usual claws and teeth, design a unique way for a creature to gut its dinner. anatomy appreciated.

Kinship - big happy family photo, showing the interaction between parents, offsprings, siblings, and maybe even the weird uncle...say cheese!

Exile - again depicting interaction (or mob mentality in this case), except everyone's shooing the village idiot away, perhaps he's just too ugly or diseased for his own kind

Parasitic Humanoid - what my gf calls me.....depict how this freeloader cling on to his giant year-round buffet

TOP and BOTTOM views - this could go with any topic, but the point is to show the creature as viewed from top or bottom. Which you don't see much.

CREATURE FACE OFF - this would involve taking 2 existing animals and then transposing select characteristics of one creature onto the other and then showing them locked in battle. For example, say it's a gorilla vs. a rhino -- maybe the gorilla has rhino horns and thick grey skin, and the rhino has gorilla hands and fur etc....

              Topic suggestion/category - How about decomposition/rotten/dead carcass
This could be topic/title specific and because of the lack of design since the actual creature would be dead and decomposing, it could include creatures such as insects that eat away at it. Kind of tackling two creatures at once, or one main creature and a handful of smaller scavengers.
