Amaakir- See I love that old one but I also like some aspects of the newer ones im trying to get a good middle ground with my design but I really want to pay a bit of an homage to the old harley

oni- thanks oni! I noticed that as well when I posted its a terrible habit of mine im really wanting to break, I have alot to learn Im trying to focus on heads in general for now kind of take baby steps into figure studies, and starting with females my weakest part seems like the best place to start.

small upload of a portrait of a friend of mine and something not really art related but my friends wanted me to make it for game of thrones :P

be careful with black it should be the last touch not the fundation. never use black in skintones. try to keep your tones in the mid area later add highlights and dark tones

@marc- thanks marc! Im trying to break the habbit of using straight black I started using an off dark grey, for sketching its a bad habbit im trying to break and so far its been a challenge.

Really hate myself for updating so long of a time frame but my day job( me living in kansas) got hit by a tornado and destroyed a few buildings and they have been keeping us extended hours and longer work days I seem to never have enough hours in the day to try and work on my art anymore its a little discouraging, I hate my day job so much but I try and use it as drive to better my art work and hone my skills. Still trying to get my finances underway so I can go to art school currently I am looking to move to LA not just for the school but also for the industry. Everyday I wish to live my dream of becoming a concept artist. Im trying to push myself as best as I can hopefully I can get finances all taken care of within 5-6months and will be underway but its those 5-6 months of working a dead end shit job that make it hard. But enough of me rambling here are only a few fem studies. I neeeeeeeed to do more work hopefully things with my day job cool down more and I can get some much needed rest and have an entire day of working on my art, again.

Crits/comments/encouragement good or bad is welcome!

Hey CJ! Nice to meet you. Glad you like my work. I'll post this on you SB thread as well but I'll do my best to help you out.

For line work in particular, I can dump a million artist your way but I'll only give you three.

First is Gustave Dore. His engravings are absolutely amazing. buy his books and study them carefully and look how he uses cross hatching to separate values and line weight to pop out objects. the thing with line work is it doesn't lie. It tells everything. And it tells how much experience the artist has. every single line has a purpose. Check him out.

Next is arguably the most relevant master to study for conceptual inspired artist like yourself.

JC Leyendecker is friggin bad ass. His techniques are founded on appealing design and you see that with his dynamic shapes to the smallest detail. He had a method of dobbing his paint strokes, and sub dividing his subject down to simple counter balancing shapes based on the characters rhythm and weight. study how he uses lines and do pencil studies of his work. for you honestly, I would drop everything and study leyendecker for a whole month just doing line drawings of his paintings. You'll be amazed at what you'll learn. I'd hold off on painting. That will come later. Do what they all say and draw draw draw.

You can find the last artist here on CGHUB and you might already know him. But check out Carlo Arellano at http://chainsawart.blogspot.com/. You'll notice he uses the same techniques as leyendecker using simple shapes and line weight. He's amazing and you can learn from his style. Don't copy his work but just study it.

If you want your work to get as good as a comic book artist, draw until you can over achieve their work. This might take you months or even years but heck, we only have the rest of our lives to better ourselves right. So I hope this helps you. Hit me up whenever you have questions. Keep studying. Take your time. Enjoy life, and draw draw draw. Cheers.

a quick uruk hai study did a line drawing and then added color in a different way than what I normally do and see how that works, will most likely lay off the color for awhile though.

This whole concept would've been great for the CharacterForge Challenge that CHoo is running just now! I love the mount btw, a giant frog, AWESOME!
