You may submit a sculpt only or a textured and rendered version if you wish. Your work will be judged for overall quality, so if you don't have time to do a textured and rendered version, it would be better to not rush that part and submit a high quality sculpt instead. But we want you guys to go all out, so the sky is the limit...
This would be fine, when we say original we mean not re-using work you have created for previous models or projects. We want your work for this project to be original, but you may get your inspiration from other sources as long as the 3d model is created from scratch by you. |

If this a modelling competition then shouldn't textures not be allowed? I can easily think of models that seemed..... ok at best but once the texture was applied it was clear that artist was much better at texturing than modelling and the model itself seemed much better than it actually was. Equally if someone doesn't feel their texturing skills are up to par or lighting skills for that matter, when they submit their entry with a regular boring grey shader wont the ones that are textured and have interesting lighting have somewhat of an automatic advantage? The opposite also applies, a bad texture can make a good model look bad. The hardcore modelling challenge on cgtalk has had this problem in the past, just wondering if its a different situation here? And since this is a 3d jam and not hardcore modelling session, why not have another category of best texture? An ok model with an amazing texture that elevates the whole piece shouldn't go unnoticed. All of this is my opinion and therefore doesn't have to be taken too seriously. |

At the end of the day we want the best entry to win, if it was achieved 60% through texture and 40% through model, then so be it, but so far that has not been the case and we don't want to limit the "3D Jams" to a modeling/sculpting only event if you wish to go further. We want these to be fun ways for artists to try new things and take some risks that they might not get to do in their daily work. You bring up some great points that we should address early, this is only the 3rd 3D jam we've had so far. If you take the last one for example, several artists went all out and did textures, but the winner was an untextured piece. For the 3D Jams competition, the judges will be evaluating the overall quality of the work submitted as a whole. Perhaps we should add a requirement that all final entries should also submit an untextured version of their model so that judges can factor that into their evaluation of the work? If you choose to invest all your time in making a great model, that will be recognized by the judges and be evident in your final work. If you choose to texture, you are going to have less of your schedule to invest in modeling, so it might suffer. So you will have to figure out how to balance your workload to get the most bang for your buck. If you are a great modeler and don't want to texture, invest your time in refining your model to perfection. If modeling isn't your strength but you still want to enter the challenge, work on the model till it satisfies your requirements and then start texturing. All this will be taken into account by our judges when they evaluate the work at the end of the challenge. Since the judges that run the 3D jams are all working professionals who do this exact work day in and out, we are trusting that they will use their knowledge and experience to pick the best work. They understand how long things take and what the strengths and weaknesses of each piece are since they do the work daily. All that said, we are considering adding other competitions to CGHUB which might be modeling only if there is enough interest. Thanks for taking the time to bring up your concerns, if you still have ideas, questions or suggestions for the 3D Jams please let us know so we can make sure that everyone is clear about the criteria for these events! |

But of course if you have that, it would look a bit weird on its own. Might be fairer/easier/simpler having something like, Best Model, Best Texturing/Lighting, Best Overall. When it comes to 2nd and 3rd runner up. I don't know how they would feel when compared to someone who had "best model". In my eyes the runner-up part will always feel a little redundant, because it says you were good but not good enough to warrant best model or texture.... you were just a runner up. Either way I do want to see textured models, but i also want it to be judged fairly (on both sides). My mind is at ease with that now. |
