Default Creature Forge 70 - D&D Re-Design II :: The Xorn

Name:  CF template copy.jpg

Welcome to the Creature Forge, the CGHUB 2D challenge of illustrating creatures of all shapes and sizes!

Creature #70 :: D&D Re-Design II :: The Xorn

Deadline: Saturday, February 16th 11:59pm [PST]

Challenge Overview:
We want to see your take on a Dungeons and Dragons Monster/Creature! We've done this challenge before and it was good fun! So if you missed it, now is your chance!
The creature you need to Re-Design is the Xorn.

"Xorn devour earthen and silicate materials, and have a taste for gems, precious metals, and magical items. A xorn is described as having a barrel-shaped body with trilateral radial symmetry; three arms, legs and eyes spaced around its torso. The mouth is located at the top of the body. Because a xorn can move through earth as easily as a fish moves through water, when they choose to attack they often use ambushes, hiding just below or above a potential victim. In fact, they often move around with the lower part of their body inside the earth."

Final Delivery:
One image of your creature with or without a background.

Good Luck and be sure to post any questions or comments in this thread.

“Please don't keep everything secret, working on your image in private only to post it at the very last hour as a surprise. The point of sharing sketches and work in progress material is so everyone can learn from each other, receive crits, compliments and improve their skills in a classroom/workshop like environment. There are no teachers and no students per say, but try to offer help to others when possible. Please be open to receiving crits, and paint-overs or mock ups of your work, as we are all here to participate, have fun, learn, grow and enjoy what each week has to offer.” --Mike Corriero

    been away for awhile, but I can't pass up a D&D Re-Design! Here's where I'm headed with my Xorn idea, trying to make it a bit less awkward looking.

        Great choice of topic Brynn, I will be having a go on this one.

        Here is my initial sketch. I did a few thumps beforehand. I might change quite a few elements still.

        I have had a hard time with the perspective on this one with the whole 120 degrees stuff. I still need to make a version where I map everything up in order to get it right. The arms should be able to "dig" ahead of the guy, which is not possible at the moment either.

        @ Ross
        I really like your sketch, especially the form and design of the tail fins are great. I will be looking forward to your update.
        Oh, and I have not forgot about your help a while back, I am still working on that piece

        @ Grumbleputty
        This is also a great idea! If you want a bit of advice, although I am far from being a pro, then I would look up a bit of anatomy reference for different types of joints. Like shoulder and elbow joints, either from a human, or maybe insects? That depends on what you go for. I myself have to work a lot on that as well, in order to make alle the arms and legs have the necessary degree of freedom. (You may find this link interesting; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_degrees_of_freedom)

        Besides that, you are off with a really good start

            @Pmiller001: Cool start, very dynamic pose! It feels like he's fighting the page borders a bit, you might try giving him a little room on the canvas.

            @andreasbech: Absolutely great design! Man, he's got a lot of character! Thanks for the advice- you were right on the money, I was fudging my joints terribly. I'm trying hard to address that moving forward.

            @Ross: Great re-imagining- I think the fishy look in inspired!

            Something to bear in mind (especially you poor souls who never wasted hours in a basement playing D&D) is that Xorns are intelligent creatures designed more around negotiating and bargaining with the players than fighting. The Wikipedia entry doesn't go into it much, but at least in the original game they would often talk first and fight later.

            Of course, nothing says your Xorn needs to be that way, but I thought it might be useful info.

                        Default Awesome starts...here's mine

                        @Ross::Love the fish concept. Very original
                        @Grumbleputty::I'd have to agree...the Xorn is very awkward to draw. But excellent challenge
                        @andreasbech::I really like your "alien" type of approach
                        @Pmiller001:: good start...watch the back leg perspective... looks a bit like a tail.
                        @Gurbatchoff::Welcome and awesome start! This is a great take on this creature.**gives you plate of cookies**
                        Below is my rough idea. I decided to go more inorganic and angular...mouth will actually have a fiery glow from inside.
