    Default Phil's Sketchbooks

    Hi all,

In an effort to improve (drastically!) I thought I'd start a sketchbook thread on here in the hope that you all may be able to help me shed the crispy skin of crapness out of my work

I keep a sketchbook with me most of the time and fill it with stuff and people I see, and I also get an amount of life drawing in when I can. I'm trying to push both hoping that it will improve my proper illustration work in the long run, so please please please if you have the time to offer any critique and help (or laughs!) I will bestow you with Universe points and/or beer if ever we meet!

    Here goes...

I found the time to do a quick self portrait the other day:

      Oils, 9x12 Inches

      Name: PMCGHUBSB0015.jpg

Size: 68.4 KB

Here's the different stages too, probably took about two hours all in. I didn't bother taking it to a finished, I'm just trying out this new (new to me anyway) way of painting from life, I usually paint like this:

      Name: PMCGHUBSB0016.jpg
Views: 0
Size: 93.6 KB

Oils, 9x12 Inches 5-6hours over 3 weeks, which, although it looks like the model, I think the painting style is a bit laboured?

      Any advice would be cool

      Thanks for looking,

      Phil

        Hi all,
I've got a W.I.P. painting on the go at the moment, so I thought I'd share the process and maybe get a few pointers from you guys ? In oil paints, roughly 22x15 inch, fantasy battle thing:

The process shots so far, I've done a fair bit more work on it and it's drying against a wall at the moment, I'll get an update as soon as I can move it

And here's a few offerings from my sketchbook:

@ d13598: Thanks very much - trying to work a bit harder at the life studies at the moment, I got into the habit of just drawing and not learning anything

@ HTartist: Thanks alot! The painting is finished now, just need to get a decent shot of it before I upload it - cheers!

I've got a few commissions on at the moment, but here's a few life studies for the time being:

Here's a portrait done at the art society, 9x12inch oils. I'm trying to be bolder and more deliberate with my brush strokes and colour choices - at the moment it looks a bit blocky and off, but it's a step in the right direction I hope

And here's a few life images, charcoal on newsprint. 1.30hr pose, 5min poses and 20min poses respectively. I've gone back to working on newsprint for the first time in a year or so, the larger sheets are a bit more liberating and my drawings were getting very samey on the small toned paper sketchbooks

A few empty mornings this week allowed me to get some much needed anatomy studies done.. this stuff gives me a head ache

Thanks for looking, any comments or advice welcome

                Hi all,

Here's a few more offerings from the Life studio:

I did this study in oil, about 5hrs over three weeks, as a bit of painting practice. A bit too sharp and edgy for my likings, but worth the effort. We'll call it a study, rather than a painting eh?

                  Hi all,

I've had this finished for a while but finally managed to borrow a decent (ish!!) camera from someone - I'm going to have to pay to get it repro'd at some point I reckon, but this will have to do for now Oil on paper, 22x16inch

                      @Zelzaan: Thanks very much

Got a few uploads from various fronts at the moment:

I'm training myself up digitally at the moment - things a looking a bit too labored for me right now - anyone have any advice on how to get a looser more dynamic way of painting? I don't know much about photoshop and all the different brushes etc, so any suggestions would be great

Any advice or critique would be much appreciated

                        Hi all,

Long time without an upload, but here's a few offerings:

This is a bit more digital practice - done in photoshop I tried rendering the image in black and white then adding the colour on afterwards. I'd seen tutorials online of people using colour or overlay layers, or using the black and white as a multiply and painting beneath, but all of these options seemed to give everything a very chrome look so I ended up just painting over in a standard layer with low opacity - any help on a better way of doing this? Would be MUCH appreciated

Here's a few life drawings, various long and shorter poses. They've put the fees up at the art society and priced me out of going several times a week I now go once a week for a four week painting pose, so hopefully I'll have a life painting to upload soon

And finally here's a few pages from the sketchbook of various bits and bobs

Thanks for looking, any advice is really appreciated (and needed !!)
